  1. I wanted a portable version but none were available for Windows 7 32-bit.
I have a program called Shadow Defender which puts my OS in a virtual mode.
I used this & then installed the full version of XMR.
Then I copied Program Files\XMR folder to a different partition.
Then rebooted to get out of Shadow Defender. This is the only way to get out of it.
Then I copied that folder back to a folder I have on my Desktop for Video programs.
Works as a portable as it is not installed.
It has the ffmpeg.dll in it's folder.

  2. yes XMR had a ffmpeg.dll, but the other guy said it had a ffmpeg.EXE which it doesn't. so i assume i'm supposed to get a DLL version?

No it doesn't use or need ffmpeg.exe, only ffmpeg.dll - if I mentioned it earlier it was a typo.
It does not need any "system" ffmeg to be on the PC

One last thing to try with XMR, delete the XMR settings folder (or rename it) here:
    C:\Users\your_userid\AppData\Roaming
    and retry XMR

  7. I removed the folder, and tried both portable and regular XMR.... nothing. It didn't even make a new XMR settings folder. Makes me wonder if it installed the user settings elsewhere because of admin folders or permissions.

You have a point, I see mine hasn't been updated in a long time. I'll see what I can find out

Not much. It looks like it uses a file called xmediarecode.json which resides in the main XMR program directory.
For portable versions of the program , this file is refreshed to defaults.
If you make a change in the program at options/preferences, that file is updated.

Doesn't seem related to your issues
if you set the format tab like this, does ac3 (dolby digital) show up on the audio tab "codec"

  9. @ davexnet.

C:\ProgramData\XMedia Recode is where my xmediarecode.json is located .
    It is dated today.

    I set XMR to Matroska.

I did not have a 6 channel .mkv but I had an 8 channel Codec ID : A_TRUEHD
The AC3 selection has up to 5.1.
Apple Lossless & Opus go up to 7.1.

    Hi cholla,
good point, seems the one in \programdata is used if the XMR folder doesn't have a copy

At this point it may be worth @kracov deleting (or renaming) the version of it in \programdata\xmedia recode\
and see if affects his issue

I played around with various sources - an encode from aac 5:1 to stereo resulted in a stereo encode that had the proper levels
and was not blown out and distorted as was the OP's

  11. I could not find an Any Video Converter that works in Windows 7 32-bit. So I can not test with it.

When I used XMR today the date on the C:\ProgramData\XMedia Recode\xmediarecode.json changed to today's date,
This should mean it is the file XMR is using on my OS anyway.
Remember I made my own portable so a downloaded portable may work differently.

This is a sample file made with XMR.I chose the Audio only option since this thread is mostly about the audio.
It is also smaller than with the video.
    The original was a EAC3 7.1.
I converted it to FLAC octagon 7.1 with XMR.
    The highest option in XMR.
I have not yet tested it on my 7.1 receiver but it played OK on my 2 channel PC in VLC.
I then converted the original file I started with to aac 5.1 & that file to stereo.
    Same results as davexnet.
not blown out and distorted as was the OP's

  12. After deleting the file in ProgramData, I was able to access AC3 Dolby Digital. However..... still no go! Still distorted!
EDIT- I forgot you said to try Stereo instead of 5.1 and that worked!

Also the other converters are junk.
shutter encoder just doesn't convert-- it hangs then just never processes. not sure if it's because of adding a ssa file.
Avidemux had some error message when trying to import a ssa file
is there a way to change the video format in clever?

Yes you change it in Multiplex.

I did the file below from the one you uploaded to Google.
It is aac 2 channel because that is what the uploaded file is.
I worked on the uploaded file with Audacity.
    See what you think.
If you like it you should be able to remove the original audio track & replace it with this one.
Clever or mkvtoolnixGUI can do this. Probably other software can too.
If you need it to be 5.1 then that file will need approximate the same work in Audacity.

Well that lasted all of 5 minutes. The stereo seemed to be good for one video, but then I convert 6 other videos with AC3 and Stereo..... distortion again.

Provide a sample video that shows this problem and some screen shots showing the settings from the
format, video and audio tabs from XMR

Yes that's good. Unfortunately my PC is inaccessible to me for a few days,
    perhaps cholla can investigate further...

  18. I looked at the file in post # 48.
It does not have any clipping when opened in Audacity.
Is what you want done is use XMR to convert it to Stereo ?

  19. I have tried 5.1 and stereo and both result in distortion

  20. @ Kracov,
The Twister video you uploaded to google drive is a little out of lip sync.
The audio pitch may be a little high on voices.
If those are the distortions you are posting about.
My PC only does 2 channel to it's speakers or headphones.
I also played your Twister file with my BD player to my 7.1 receiver.
This way I could listen to the 5.1 audio.
    The problems same as above.

The videos below are a clip from a DVD rip.
The clip is the from the same section as the one you uploaded in post #49 .
The audio is in lip sync & sounds good to me.
The Twister_XMR.mp4 clip was doe with the same setting in XMR as in post #46 .
The VTS_01_1_1.VOB is a clip directly from the DVD done with ffmpeg.

My browser does not need to download the clips to play them in VLC.
If that helps but download them if you want to.

  21. are you saying i have to convert with only Clever? that app is really hard to use. your grammar also doesn't make sense sometimes. I don't know how to change the video dimensions.

    No.
I never posted only to use Clever.
These are my posts where I posted Clever in this topic:

I never suggested for you to change dimensions.
Of course the dimensions are different for a DVD rip.
I thought the main problem was audio distortion.

  23. you suggested i use Clever, but for the purpose of conversion i also need to change the video dimensions. is that possible?

  24. I asked if you had tried Clever.
The only suggestion I made to use Clever was to change the Audio track.

I will take a look at XMR & see if it can change the video dimensions.
I have not used it enough to know.
    I will take a look & see.

Most of the time changing dimensions (resolution) gives a "streched" look either vertical or horizontal.
This is a topic where this was discussed a lot.

  25. i already know how to change video dimensions in XMR, by locking the aspect ratio. I am not sure what you're getting at as to how to fix the audio issues within XMR. Which is why I have Clever open right now and I don't see any method to modify the video dimensions.

  26. This is a simple conversion from NTSC DVD to Pal DVD dimensions with Clever.

    Step-by-Step Instructions for Clever
Load Your Video: Open the program, click the main window, and select the video file you want to resize.
Access Video Encoding: Click the Encoding button on the main interface and choose Video.
Set the Frame Size: Find the Frame Size section. You can manually enter both the width and height.
Encoding: Choose your preferred video codec (such as H.264) and set the quality/bitrate settings on the right panel.
Select Encode button. I used Lanczos then OK.
Then select Multiplex Set the format. I used .mp4 for this file.
    Uncheck the old video.
    Use the new video.
    I used the same audio.
I used the resolution for PAL DVD for this sample.

  27. okay my issue is that the multiplex doesn't seem to hardcode/burn in the subtitles. I assume that's the only way to add subtitles. If it's softcode only, then Clever isn't an option for me.
    Windows 10, MPC-BE

  28. In post# 58 the "Video Encoding" picture.
    The "Video Options" square>
    Select "Burn in subtitle".
A window will open & you can either open the subtitle file or drop & drag it.
    Then hit the Encode button.
    Let it encode .
    Then "Main page".
    Select "Multiplex" button.
    Uncheck the original video.
Check the new video & the audio.
    Select the "Multiplex" button there.
You should now have a file with hard coded subtitles.
