  1. Thanks cholla. The audio is nonexistent.... I assume it has something to do with Clever's multiplex. I will have to re-encode with another converter to see if that works better. What a pain.
Hopefully davexnet can help with XMR's audio issues.

Below is the starting AV file input.mp4 without any subtitles hard or soft.
Then the finished AV file input.mkv with hard coded subtitles.
I added the subtitle file in case anyone needs to practice with it.
I had to put it in a .zip file to post it.

Is this result with Clever ?
What ffmpeg version are you using ?
You have not posted any 7.1 surround file to download.

Have you tried playing the files with VLC ?
Or what device are you playing the files on where you hear the distortion?

What is the original Audio format ?
The last files I posted are 2 channel do they result in a distorted file for you ?

  5. I'm actually deaf which is why I need subtitles. I know the files are distorted because its a constant garbled loud feeling on my subwoofer. I've confirmed this with my roommate. Later I will check if playing them on the PC sounds fine for my roommate. But I typically test them through my Playstation 3. I put the 8.1 ffmpeg in the clever folder. It's weird that the filename says 5.1 when the info says 7.1. I can post it if you really need it but I posted a 5.1 video before and I think it would give the same distortion with clever. For some reason, converting audio in clever and XMR just don't work well with my computer.

  6. I have the Twister file you posted downloaded.
I will have to try it on my 7.1 receiver & see what it shows 5.1 or 7.1.
When I open it in Audacity it doe not show any clipping or abnormally high peaks.
The Reign of Terror file had both.

If you did the Clever add hard subs like I posted it should have just copied the audio file with no encoding.
So if there is distortion it should have been there already.

I can rip the Audio as a copy directly with ffmpeg & post it .
You can see if it has any distortion that you can feel or your roommate can hear.

  8. I would give AVC a try but my computer is Windows 7 32-bit.

I usually have good results with ffmpeg.
    Which is what Clever uses.
I have other converters but I would have to see how they handle subtitles.
This is the ffmpeg rip of just the .ac3 file from the Twister clip you posted.

  9. the version of AVC I use is from 6 years ago, so that version may support W7. It can't handle Opus audio which is typically within certain MKVs. So that is why I needed XMR.

    clever FFmpeg-GUI processes streams individually.
This is because not all streams in a video necessarily need to be modified.

    Regarding your question:
If you want to burn subtitles into the video, you’ll need to do that in the video encoding section.
There’s a separate checkbox for that. You can use text-based subtitles (srt, vtt, etc.) or image-based subtitles (sup, sub, idx, etc.) here.

Otherwise, subtitles are treated as a separate stream.
You can add them to the video in the Multiplex section.

    So:
The video stream is modified in the Encode Video section, the audio stream in the Encode Audio section, and existing subtitles in the Edit Subtitles section.

After conversion, you’ll find all modified streams in the Multiplex section (along with all source streams).
Here, you select which streams should be included in your final video, and then click Multiplex.
You’ll then find your final video in your destination folder.

Here you can check the result.
Only the audiostream has been changed, from 6ch to stereo. (if was off by 900ms, fixed in the multiplex section).
The videostream is yours, not changed.

    @ Kracov.
This is an .mp4 made from the .mkv in post #62.
See if you can play it on your PS3.
I have been trying to rip the subtitle from the Twister DVD I have.
No success so far. If you have a good method for doing this please post it.
This is the type subtitles on this DVD:
    Text #1
    ID : 189 (0xBD)-32 (0x20)
    Format : RLE
    Format/Info : Run-length encoding

I use Inviska mkv extract to extract subs from mkvs. I don't use rippers, not in a long while.
Also, your Twister movie is some other period movie. My movie is a disaster tornado movie with Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton.

I had been working with the Twister movie also.

Also is the version of AVC for Windows 7 32-bit ?
If it is would you post the version number & I will look for it.

  16. any video converter ultimate 7.1.6 supports win7 for sure

your twister video is black in ps3, but audio might be okay. is there music in it? i could feel music-like beats. roommate isn't home for a while yet.

but i finally figured it out! turns out i was supposed to encode the audio file separately. this must be why i couldn't understand what you meant. man, Clever is just not a user friendly program. Anyway, audio is great once i used 2ch stereo and added it and muxed etc.

So with that said, i'm still hoping dave can help me figure out why XMR can't encode the audio properly. maybe i'll have to try a different forum.

  17. I will see if I can find & try that AVC version.

The .mp4 file below the conversion was all done with ffmpeg CLI.
    No Clever& No XMR.
I did have to use MakeMKV to rip the DVD.
It was the only way I could keep the subtitle files.
Once ripped I clipped the .mkv in the location of the Twister clip you uploaded to Google drive.
I also kept the time the same.
This is so you can compare them.
I then used Inviska mkv extract to extract the subtitles.
It worked fine but the subtitles were not in the format I needed for ffmpeg.
I used SubtitleEdit for converting to .ass subtitles.
The twister that was black in your PS3 may have had too high of a profile level.
I matched the .mp4 below to the same as the one you uploaded.
This one is still 5.1 channel.
    See if this one plays.

  18. like i said i've already solved the issue by re-encoding the audio with stereo. i don't think my subwoofer can play 5.1 channel, that is probably why there is distortion. i don't have speakers, just a subwoofer. maybe my subwoofer settings need to be changed but i don't know what to change.

Or this is what I found online.
I also converted to 2 channel stereo from the 5.1.

I'm going to have another look at XMR & see what I can get it to do as well as checking out AVC if the version you have works for me.

  25. this is the weird part. AVC copies the audio for conversion. even the 6 channel audio gets copied and works properly for my subwoofer. Yet 6ch doesn't work for XMR or Clever. So maybe my subwoofer settings do not need to be configured.

Do a conversion with each software & post the MediaInfo on the created files.
Maybe we can figure out the problem.
Even AVC is supposed to use ffmpeg.
    Something must be different.

If your subwoofer sounds good with the AVC conversion then It should not be the problem.
Also take a look at all the conversions in Audacity.
    Do they show "clipping" ?
You have to make a setting in Audacity to "Show Clipping".
