  1. Hi Folks -- I finally picked-up a DVP5990 from BustBoob.ca. First day with it, but pretty happy so far.

    Q: (might be a dumb one, but) Does the last firmware update include all others up to that date? Or is it a 1 by 1 affair?

    Was dieing to try some of the firm's posted in these threads, but found my USB stick missing. Picking a new one up in the morning.

    TFYA
    Cheers,
    Wanderlustus

    V31 is all you need..go here to choose from all the Logos available.

    http://vb6rocod.blogspot.com/2009/01/update-2-599037.html

    You can also upgrade the software by burning the .bin file to a CD-R / CD-RW.

  3. POSSIBLE (MINOR?) PROBLEM - Just Noticed That 1.4 gb AVI Video Files On DVD+RW Disks Display, Not One, But *TWO* "Lines" Each In The DVP5990_37_vb6_v31_DivX_Logo FirmWare FILE BROWSER - Entering The First Line Will Play The First Half Of A Given AVI Video File Only; The Second (Ghost?) Line Does Not Play The AVI Video File At All - The *Very Same* AVI Video Files On A DVD+R Disk, In Comparison, Display *ONE* Line Each In The FILE BROWSER - Entering The One Line For A Given AVI Video File Plays The Entire AVI Video File From Start To Finish Completely OK.

    Weird...I just burned a 1.45GB AVI Video File onto a Maxell DVD+RW Disk using DVP5990_37_vb6_v2_3_1_DivX_Logo_V1File_Browser_UOP Firmware Version and it showed only one line and played perfectly.

    Thanks for the quick reply, man. BTW, V31 is for the DVP5990/37, correct? I ask because I see a lot of folks with different #'s at the end of the model name.

    Thank You *Very Much* For Testing This - Seems Something Other Than The DVP5990_37 FirmWare Itself Could Be Causing This Possible Problem In The DVD Player Reading DVD+RW Disks For Us - We're Using Verbatim DVD+RW And DVD+R Disks - Also, We're Using Roxio Easy Media Creator (EMC) v8.05, An Old Version, For DVD+RW (And DVD+R) Disk Writing - Should Note That, According To A CNET User Review, There's A Substantial Difference In D2D Packet Writing Programs For Different EMC Versions - For Example, UDF (Universal Disk Format) v1.5 Is Used For EMC v8.05 And UDF v2.0 Is Used For The Newer EMC v9) - Maybe This Difference In UDF D2D Writing Programs Is The Reason For The Difference We're Seeing In Our DVD+RW Tests? In Any Case, Thanks Again For Testing This For Us. It's Greatly Appreciated.

    Let us know when you figure it out. I used Nero Express Ultra Edition 6.6.1.4 to burn the DVD+RW. Was that AVI file you used ever split in two parts then joined together? Also, have you tried a different 1.4 GB AVI file using the same brand Disks and burning process?

    Thanks For Your Reply - Several Completely Different AVI Video Files (Each About 1.4 gb FileSize) Were Tested With The Exact Same (TWO-Lines-Each-In-The-File-Browser) Result - None Of The (1.4 gb) AVI Video Files Were Ever Physically Split Into Two Parts (And Joined Together) As Far As We Know. Should Note That Smaller (About 0.6 gb Each) AVI Video Files On Our DVD+RW Disks Were Completely OK And Each AVI Video File Displayed As One Line Only In The DVD Player File Browser (FileSize Seems To Make A Difference). Yes, We'll Try And Let You Know If We Find Out More About The Problem - In Any Regards, Seems The DVP5990 FirmWare Itself Is Likely NOT The Cause As Far As We Can See At The Moment. Thanks Again For Your Interest And Reply.

    Thanks for the reply. I don't really care about the changing the logo (except maybe to plop something of my own in there), I'm more interested in the long file names, more title listing and the like. Again, might sound like a dumb question, but isn't this bin just for logos? I'm pretty new to this firmware-for-DVD-players stuff, but feel free to hit me with a hammer for my doltish questions.

    Those files are the complete upgraded software for your player that includes ALL the updates and modifications to date including long file names etc...the Logo names in each of those files are included in the file name so you can tell which one you're getting.

    And the Logo is going to change unless you download the file labeled "Philips Logo" which keeps the original Logo that came with your player you Dolt!

    Be sure to follow the upgrade instructions listed near the bottom of the page from the link below.

    Good luck.

    PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE SOLVED - We Burned AVI Video Files (About 1.4 gb Each) Into Our DVD+RW Disks With Nero Express (v7.0.5.4), Instead Of The Roxio Easy Media Creator (Older v8.05 - With UDF v1.5), And The AVI Video Files Displayed Correctly As One-Line Each (And NOT The TWO-Lines Each As Before Using The Roxio Program) In The FirmWare Version DVP5990_37_vb6_v31_DivX_Logo FILE BROWSER. Seems The Problem Was Caused By The DVD+RW Burning Program: The Nero Program Seems To Work Better Than The Roxio Program (The Older v8.05 At Least) In This Instance. Thanks Again For Your Help With This.

    That' Philips for ya. According to their support it's not a bug, it's a feature.

    Did the sound ever work and if it did work at one point, was it before or after upgrading the firmware to one of the modified versions?

    What a breakthrough for the increase to 48 Characters via USB!!!!

    Thanks to Tentakulokans for the patch and of course vb6rocod for making it all happen!

    This latest version is working perfectly on my 5990/37.

  22. I registered here to say thanks for all the work that has gone into this. This firmware makes this player nearly perfect, especially at it's current price point. I do, however, have one question;
    I recently inserted a DVD with multi-angles (wall-e) and every time there is additional scenes available, it pops up the angle icon on the screen and it stays there for the duration of the multi-angle scene. Has anyone else noticed this? Is there any way to disable this?? It is very annoying!

    Thanks for the efforts in improving the player's functions.

    I do find one big issue/step backwards in functionality :

    Update:

    * 8 lines in filebrowser
    * Jpeg preview in "background"
    * No MP3 TAG (no space)
    Removing any form of MP3/ID tags is a real problem, as many music files have fairly long filenames. For example,
    'Red Hot Chili Peppers - Greatest Hits (Warner Bros) - 01 - Under The Bridge.mp3'
    Obviously it doesn't come close to showing the actual song title at the end of the file name, so you end up with a whole album of files that cannot be identified with no TAG information to list 'artist' & 'song title' in their own lines. It became very clear that this was a real issue when I updated the firmware and copied a few dozen songs onto a thumb drive and I can't read the song title to half of the songs because of the missing ID Tag info. Would it be possible to even add back on 1 TAG line to display the song title tag? This alone would be very beneficial. Thanks again for the FW.

    D'oh, how about using a less excessive naming scheme? If I want to listen to Chili Peppers I don't give a damn about them being signed to Warner Brothers, that's pointless information.

    Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge.mp3

    All other info like track number, album, etc. is in the ID3v2 tag, the track order is in the m3u file. Granted, the m3u won't help on the Philips but at least you can find the Chili Peppers album folder and read the song title if names are shortened properly.

    Thanks for not addressing the actual issue, I knew that that would be someone's 'resolution' to the problem. 'Just rename the stupid files'... I'm not going to rename thousands of MP3 files that are titled in a 'artist-album-song' format so that I can read the files more easily in some DVD player, thanks. There are very logical reasons for not simply naming a file in a simple 'artist-song' format, there are often different versions of a song on different albums, live versions, etc. It's not excessive. I have some songs that I have several different variations/versions of, simply naming the files in a 'artist-song name' format doesn't work. And BTW, that's probably the only album that I have that has the record company in the file name, and it's not pointless information as you suggest, it's likely a case of them having a different greatest hits album under a different record label and was needed to differentiate between the two.

    There are very logical reasons to keep the filenames simple and the excessive info in the ID3 tag. With properly tagged files decent taggers like MP3tag can rename thousands of files automatically over and over again.

    Well, apparently the other obvious solution did not come to your mind either, so I'm gonna write it down for you: don't upgrade to that modded firmware version that does not show ID3 tags anymore. Easy, isn't it?

    This is great. I just loaded the DVP5990_37_vb6_v32_All_Logo.rar version and it looks great. I do have a problem which I had with the original firmware and that is when I have 1.4GB Xvid file it will play 2/3 of the file then stop. Its not just one file, I've tried others and then same thing happens.. Any idea why that might be.

    If it's from USB I don't have a clue, but if it's from a DVD-RW it might be the program you're using to burn the AVI files to Disk.

    Read here about a similar problem with 1.4GB AVI files only playing half way through. Switching from Roxio to Nero solved the problem...
