Did not come to my mind 'either'? My response that I knew that renaming would be someone's answer implies that, yes, the thought had come to my mind before you said it. And yes of course the thought of going back to an older FW was considered as well, obviously I was well aware that ID3 Tag info existed previously or I wouldn't have commented in the first place. Thanks for 'writing it down for me', how would those options ever come into my mind had you not mentioned them?Originally Posted by Techflaws
FW upgrades are intended to improve upon previous versions, though sometimes that isn't necessarily the case. And I made a post pointing out that the removal of any form of displaying ID3 Tags removed a useful function, and therefor in one area a step backward. More file lines were added, that is the upside. Perhaps it would be possible to add 1 or 2 ID3 Tag lines of data without removing the quantity of file lines - there is screen space in the upper right area of the screen, maybe 2 lines of data could be placed there. But is undeniable that ID3 Tag data is still useful, and my post was made to explain that.

My question is how does it handle the upscale for PAL DVD's in the USA with a firmware hack? I want to upscale 576 to 1080. I know with the region hack it down converts 576 to 480 then upscales. I just want to upscale from 576 to 1080.

I just bought the DVP5990/37 from Best Buy in Illinois for $59.99. I assumed it had the latest stock firmware and did not look before updating the firmware on this site:
Used this one:
DVP5990_37_vb6_v3.rar
http://rapidshare.de/files/42448813/DVP5990_37_vb6_v3.rar.html
Everything seems to be working. How can I tell I have this exact firmware release from the Stock one?
Should I revert back to the Stock Philips one in case it was not up to date then update the one from here?
I read the techtips and realized you are suppose to update the firmware with the latest one from Philips before you update one from here?
Is this model in general better than most others because it has the special chip on it that can take modded firmware?
I had a DVP642/37 that just went out on me. Blinking Power button. Did a google search and read that Cap 304 or 316 forgot which was bad and you could see a Bulge in it.
I could see it right away and soldered a Huge 50 Volt 1000 uf cap only rated at 85 degrees C and not 105 as the original. Got it from Radio Shack and works great now.
The DVP5990/37 will not have this problem will it? Sounds to me like Philips put a Defective Cap on the Power supply. Is it possible Philips purposely did this and maybe "Planned Obsolescence" on the DVP5990/37 as well? -

Hey everyone, I started reading this thread and got to pg 6 of 20. Call me lazy, but I am soon to head out to work and had a few questions: (BTW, I have never changed firmware before... a complete N00B)
1) When I insert a DVD that has previously been played, my 5990/37 will resume from the last spot I watched. Is it possible to have it start at the beginning (Menu) instead?
2) The volume buttons are for use with a TV I believe. Is there any other way to get the remote's volume buttons to work with the player's volume?
3) If #2 is possible, can the volume be increased/decreased without any visual representation on the screen?
4) related to #3, how can I disable the >>| and |<< from showing on the screen when I advance to the next or previous chapter?
5) I read in some early posts that some were using VOB files from their USB drives. Can you provide a link so I can learn more? I would love to have all of the videos I use for my job all in one place (rather than having to swap out DVDs)
6) If i do use VOB files from an USB drive, would the menu/navigation etc. look and work the same as if it was on a DVD?
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!!
Read on if you are curious as to why I desire these things:
I perform educational/historical assemblies for elementary schools using my Philips DVD player, a video projector, and a big screen. Depending on the school's desires, I will use a different DVD that provides the background video to the specific topic I am teaching (thus my possible desire to have them all saved as VOBs on a USB drive; how do you navigate between different VOBs that were not originally used together?)
Sometimes I have less time to perform than others. To shorten my presentation I hit >>| But it shows on the screen, and I would love for it to be hidden from the students/teachers that are watching.
Sometimes there are parts of the video that I would like to be louder (either for emphasis, or because the kids are too loud) and I would like to adjust that too without anyone seeing.
Thanks again for any help you can provide! -
Hello and thank you for your great job!
I have a question though before I start the upgrade of my brand-new dvp5990/37 that I bought in the USA and brought to Poland.
I have no problem with it's 110 volts of power supply as I have a 220 to 110V power converter.
HOWEVER as for its TV SYSTEM which by default is NTSC I HAVE A VERY BIG PROBLEM on my PAL TV. The picture is a little "jerky" due to NTSC output.
Is there any chance my player would become a Multi TV system player or have an option of PAL output after I download your new firmware?
Please PLEASE answer my question as it is of much importance to me now as I don't want to make things worse.
Another thing I am interested in is that my player was bought in January and I am not sure it has a brand new official Philips firmware installed on it so my question is - should I install the latest update from Philips site before I upgrade using your firmware?
There is yet another question I have if I may.
I actually am happy with this player as I especially like the way it goes from one video file to another when they are recorded on my ISO DVD-Rs (There is no menu of the player seen between the clips).
I tried Philips 5982/37 before and I was disappointed seeing the light blue menu of the player every time in between the video clips (I like watching my music videos recorded raw (ISO) on my DVD-R's). So will this new firmware of yours keep this wonderful feature of DVP 5990/37 working same way as now for me or at least is there any way for me to get rid of the menu altogether so it is not seen every time between short clips.
And finally as of today February 21, 2009 what file exactly should I download from your site to go through upgrade smoothly and safely? Again, I have 5990/37 model (US).
Thank you very very very much!

I can't get these bin firmwares to autoboot on my usb flash drive enough though the bin file is the only file that exists in the directory
any pointers? i'm using a dvp5992 player by the way -
What's the name of the file you have stored on the USB drive?
With the 5992 on, push the Eject button on the remote... then once the tray's out, hit the 5 key on the remote twice. A filename should appear near the top of the screen. Tell us what it is.
Does the player recognize AVIs if you copy any to the USB drive? It may just not recognize the USB drive, in which case, you'll have to use a different USB drive, or use a CD.If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -

thanks -
just registered (finally) and had a question. With the introduction of DivX 7 - which enables playing out .mkv files ... is there a mod out there for the 5990 that upgrades the DivX to version 7 so we can play .mkv files from the player?

I was viewing over a hundred jpeg images from DVD and I couldn't figure out if there was a way to go to the next photo manually rather than waiting for the slide show, is there a way? also is there a place to set the slideshow timings?

I just downloaded and installed the new firmware, which looks pretty cool. I was wondering though, new option, what is it in this general settings that is called "vertical" and it has a range of 1 -10 or 20...?
i have no idea what that option does and it seems to be a new one from this firmware upgrade. Can someone explain? -

I have seen a problem with the firmware. When the movie is more than 2 hours and it is a xvid video and ac3 audio, the movie seems to cut off around 2 hour time frame. It just goes to file system menu. I have seen the same behavior whenever the source file is one single file about 1.5 GB.
Sample statistics for the file that failed to play till the end. I tried playing with vlc and everything was fine on pc.
Container: AVI
Rip Size: 1.45 GB
Resolution: 672 x 304
Run Time: 2h 33m 08s
Video Codec: XVID @ 1197 kbps
Frame Rate: 23.976
Audio Format: AC3 - 160 kbps - CBR - 6 Channels @ 48000 Hz
Appreciate your help in resolving this issue. -
Haven't tried that large files with ac3 in it, mp3 sound works fine after remuxing. Maybe you should try it.

If you want to see good subtitles from VOB files...
Find what files are for movie. Not all time is VTS_01_1.VOB. Open in a player and check.
Let's say that is VTS_01_1.VOB. Open VTS_01_1.IFO in VSRip or in VobSub.
Check in "Program Chain" what PGC is used for subtitles.
If you have only one movie on DVD. - there is only one subtitles.
Select language (or leave all) and extract sub/idx in VIDEO_TS folder.
Open idx file in a text editor and check:
# Vob/Cell ID: 3, 1 (PTS: 0)
timestamp: -00:00:00:080, filepos: 000000000
If you have "-" sign delete this.
That's all. Time for this ~ 5 minutes.
After VOB is loaded by player press "Subtitle" and select what subtitle language do you want (Subtitle 0x/0y:Name of language).
If you have more than one movie on DVD (more than one subtitles).
Extract subtitles only for one language.
Let's say that you have x subtitles language on DVD. Open idx file and change:
# English
id: en, index: 0 --->>> change here with x+1.
Save file.
After VOB is loaded by player, press "Subtitle". First time display "Subtitle 01/01: lang. name" , after that, when movie have subtitles in vob file, player display "Subtitles 01/0y:". Press "Subtitles" button to load what subtitle do you what to use. In this case subtitle language is not displayed (Subtitles 0x/0y.

Hello, I've been reading this and I have some questions.
First, I'm thinking of buying this player because I have a few region 2 dvd's from japan that I would like to play and I heard that this player is easy to make region free. I will mainly be using this play to play my non region 1 dvds. However, I read in the dvdhacks section on this player that you're only limited 10 plays of other region discs before it locks into region 1 only and can't be changed again. My question is does a firmware update make it region free permanantly?
Secondly, which firmware update should I do?
Lastly, do I just unrar the files onto the usb drive or do I burn it onto a cd? By the way I'm new to updating firmware.
