I change fonts for subtitle, but for Filebrowser you must use latin alphabet.
Also, minor change, new OSD font (smaller) and for "GoTo" when enter color is now yellow and is change to white.

Legal reason: the owner of the DVD license does not allow playback of the Video-DVD format from anything else than a DVD.

Technical reason: DVDs address UDF sectors referenced in the ifos, HDDs don't use an UDF filesystem so at least mapping would be necessary. According to one of the Mediatek firmware modders one would need ARM sourcecode to add any such feature which ain't gonna happen.

1251 is for Cyrillic users (Russian).

    This is last stable:
To version with and without volume on "Repeat" and "Repeat AB".

Thank you! It still looks like PowerDVD is above the DVD license, at least, it plays full DVD directories from an HD just fine. I think that encryption is part of the constraint, if it is not encrypted, it is playable! Now, if only we had some kind soul who could provide the source for the ARM, to include IFO parsing ... I know, I know, no chance in hell ... But what a cool feature that would be!

I have tested the 1.2.1 firmware some more. I have the 5960 model [ http://board.softpedia.com/index.php?showtopic=4372 ], and there there was a resume function implemented for DivX files. The way it works is when you are on the bookmarked file, just press ">>", and you get to the point where it got stopped (before being turned off). I see that this feature was not ported to 5990.

Also, subtitles seem to not always work with the "GOTO" function, it is a bit sporadic.

I am not complaining for the sake of being negative, just to point out where things seem to be a bit less than ideal.

Can someone explain why the need to upgrade from original firmware? Don't get me wrong, I know it adds this and that but what do you think is a must to have that is not in the original firmware?

It will help me decide if I should bother upgrading or not.

I plan to watch DVD and DivX films (no sub-title) thru USB and listen to music also.

    Thanks to enlighten me.

It's not mandatory, I simply suggested it so ppl wouldn't blame vb6rocod's firmware if anything went wrong.

I know it's not mandatory, I just want to know if there is at least one option that is so much appreciated that is missing from original so upgrading is very welcome.

    What's your favorite new function/feature?

  10. Has anyone tried to format with ext2 instead of fat32? According to the memorex BD player discussion, it overcomes the fat32 filesize limits:

    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=15237507&highlight=ext2ifs#post15237507

I am waiting for my player to be delivered and cannot verify this. Thanks.

I noticed when I play DIVX in 1080i mode with HDMI, different movies displayed like they moved to the bottom of the screen. Top 1/3 of the screen is black and picture is bellow that. Works fine with composite connections. Is HDMI messed up on my player?

The Go-To function alone is worth the upgrade. I don't use subtitles but it has a fair amount of improvements in the way its displayed. Also, the GUI is much nicer now. Doesn't hurt to upgrade and try it since you can always downgrade

vb6rocod, your firmware above works great with my current player but I really like the File Browser skin and DivX logo from my old player's firmware. Here's a link to that firmware...DVP5960_37_vboroda_1252_v6.24_pb.zip [1.07mb]

    http://www.phunkyfish.com/file_download/31

Can you possibly modify your DVP 5990/37 firmware to the File Browser skin and DivX logo used in the DVP5960/37 vboroda and make the new firmware available for download?

Thanks so much for your time and effort making these tweaks for our players!

  15. Hi guys, I upped to the latest firmware, the one with the volume. But I noticed when it try to go back from watching a movie, instead of the theme, the screen goes blue. I can see the folders, but everything else is lightblue in color, no toolbars or scrollbars cant be seen.

Thanks for all the great work. Can you post the Turkish firmware again. It seems like all the downloads are down now.

    Thanks again for the help

It seems that on a FAT32 HD the player supports directories only 4 levels deep, so if you are in the 4th level, you cannot descent into lower directories.

    Can anyone confirm this?

Nope. For a test I made 8 dir levels and it works fine. You prolly exceeded the max number of dirs which might have some weird results.

Thanks to you both for getting this, my 5990 startup looks a lot better now.

I do have a question, is it possible to play mkv files on the 5990?
    If I can, how?
    If I can't, how could I?

I see so many x264 rips and its a shame I think i'm only limited to xvids.

    Thanks

Well, maybe then you should have bought a player that unlike the Philips 5990 does playback high definition material.

it's fine if you stick to DVDs and your own divx/xvids, rather than illegally downloading rips.

    vb6rocod,

Thanks for your work! Much appreciated.
I noticed that you were able to make a korean version as seen in softpedia forum.

Would it be possible for you to also make a Chinese traditional version?
From the original file on Philips' website (dvp5992_37_fus_aen.zip)

Font 2 [02-04] is Chinese Simplified
Font 3 [05-07] is Chinese Traditional <<<------- PLEASE MAKE THIS ONE!

Currently the version I'm using from videohelp is not showing chinese filenames correctly in the file browser. It shows up as ascii sybols.

Is my understanding correct in that when you change a code page, it affects the filebrowser display and also the subtitle displayed?

    Thanks!

    I completely understand

Need 1: Filebrowser not showing correctly, I can't tell what file is what.
Instead of chinese chars, it shows up as ¥-µ½£«³» random ascii chars .
Neither the original or your 1.2.1 shows it correctly.

Desire 2: Display subtitles in chinese.
Yes, would like subtitle for avi. I don't recall it working but I can go verify it tonight.

    Desire 3: OSD in chinese
    Nice but not required.

When you make a language change, does that change both OSD and subtitles or just subtitles?
When I looked at font 3, I noticed that the table of chinese chars seem to be those used in common conversation.
So I assume that it is not for changing the OSD...is this correct?

    In this post,
    http://board.softpedia.com/index.php?showtopic=9603&view=findpost&p=34060
you mentioned that need to fill out list with unicode value.... can you clarify what needs to be done?

    Thanks for your help!

    For filibrowser, nothing to do.
    For OSD, leave English.
For sub, I change "Large" with "Chinese" and I put Font 3 (05-07).
    Code:
      7. No Pic. | DivX Subtitle | DivX Subtitle
         0008 FFFF 0233 0233 002D 0000 0003 000E FFFBE0 0000 - ROM:40E2
     => 1. Standard | Standard | Standard
           0369 0369 0369 0E - ROM:FBC0
        2. Small | Small | Small
           0355 0355 0355 0B - ROM:FBC7
        3. Medium | Medium | Medium
           0219 0219 0219 10 - ROM:FBCE
        4. Chinese | Chinese | Chinese
           005E 005E 005E 05 - ROM:FBD5

Unicod is for MTKFontCreator. Open ini file and see how is for other language (Code Page). That's because I use font with outline for subs. Font from firmware (Font 3) is without outline.
See if work... that's all what I can to do.

    Hi vb6rocod

Thank you very much for your hardwork. I have downloaded a turkish version of your firmware. I am not sure if it is latest version I have tried to download the version that are in this post but they are all dead. After the upgrade I can see the Turkish chractes in subs but the subs are in the middle of the screen and the back ground color is purple and the chracter color is yellow. I have tried to change the color for background and character color with no success. Can you post the lastest version of the Turkish firmware again. Or is there a way to change the background color etc.

    Thank for your help

    Happy holidays.
