I d/l the last divx firmware and ran into a problem after the install
http://rapidshare.de/files/43881809/DVP5990K_75_vb6_v31_DivX_Logo.rar.html
I have been using my player from the composite connector because the tv I am using doesn't have hdmi or component. Now my screen is just a blurr of green diagonal flashing lights.
I can't retry with an older version because I can't see if it's at the proper screen to re-apply an older firmware.
I hope that's what the problem is and that I didn't fry this thing. I've tried 3 others before that and didn't have any problems. I did it the same as before so don't know why this happened. caution is in order.

There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

To all: Please don't blame the upgrade because it may just be an issue with me or my player.

I'm documenting what happened and what I did for future reference.

I reverted back to the previous version (8 line cd_logo) version by doing a blind reinstall. The problem persisted so I unplugged the unit for about 5 minutes and it reset. It's ok now back to where it was before.

It wasn't what I thought that caused the problem. No matter what I did the tv was scrambly with colored diagonal lines. The sound was ok and the menu on the player was showing the no disc and when I inserted one it showed the avi track number. When I pressed play the time moved. I could pause etc... and there was sound but I was operating blind on the tv. I tried to bring up the menu but it didn't seem to work but I really couldn't tell. I have a component to vga switcher so I hooked it up and sent the vga signal to my projector but the signal was blank. I hooked the composite to the av input on the projector and tried the menu and this time it came up. I couldn't get to the reset option it just skipped over it. If I took the disc out of the player I couldn't even get the menu to show. It only worked when I had a disc and it was paused or stopped. Although dim and blurry on the edges I was able to read most of the menu items. It was set properly to NTSC and not progressive although that wouldn't have been a issue with my projector. Everything looked as it should but the video was still scrambled.

At this point it is possible that if I had unplugged the unit it might have reset itself but I didn't know that at the time. That's when I decided to do a blind re-install of the previous firmware 2_3_1 CD_Logo. The update was successful but the player was still scrambled even after a power off and on. That's when I decided to unplug it for 5 minutes and as soon as I turned it on I was very happy to see the Philips disc logo.

Whats weird is that although I could faintly see the menus on my projector, I couldn't get to the reset menu.

I would have liked the divx logo but now that it's back I don't think I'l try it again just for that. If a really good feature is added I won't hesitate to try it again.

 @VB6rocod
These firmware upgrades are fantastic and much better than the originals. keep up the good workThere's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

I've seen some flakiness in our player as well.. without the updates or with.

Occasionally I only see the blue and green guns kicking in, so all the red is missing from the images.

Yesterday, we saw a mostly black screen with some colored diagonal flecks. In both cases, unplugging the unit and plugging it back in cured the issues.

I have a feeling there's a bad bunch of chips in some of the players.. walmart has a 90 day return policy, so I'll be returning mine for a replacement before that time runs out.

For reference, I bought my player mid November.Gary Tabar Jr.

I see on your website that you updated the 3980K_55(75). I was wondering if there will eventually be an update for the 3962/37 since the firmwares are so similar?

Thanks again for all your work!

That player sees its share of avi movies without hard coded subs so it would be nice to have a choice of colors and position.Originally Posted by vb6rocod

	Hi, vb6rocod

Thank you for your great work!

I am a newbie here. I have some questions about my 5990/37.

I got it in boxingweek and enjoyed it just a problem: I never get any Chinese subtitle even English. I did what I can do: Ensured that the file name extension of subtitle files is .srt, .sub, .ssa. Ensured that the subtitle file had the exact same file name as the movie file.

What can I do now? Which your updated firmware is better for me?

 Thanks for your help!

No Chinese subtitle here. Sorry for this.Originally Posted by cncaboy

We Don't Know If This Entirely Answers Your Concerns, But We Tried Several Non-English Videos (AVI Files) And Found No Problems Whatsoever Viewing The Related English Subtitles (SRT Files). For The Record, We Tried Several Language Videos, Including Some In French. However, Videos (AVI Files) In *Any* Language, Including Chinese, Would Be Expected To Display The Related English Subtitles (SRT Files) Completely OK Of Course. We Used The Very Latest DVP5990_37_vb6_v31_DivX_Logo Version FirmWare (Our Earlier Test Report) For The Philips DVP 5990/37 DVD Player Under Conditions Similar To Those We Described Previously In Detail. (See Also Related TechFlaws And/Or VB6rocod Blogs If Interested.) Hope This Helps In Some Way.Originally Posted by cncaboy

I just installed the DVP5990_37_vb6_v31_Philips_Logo.rar version, and did a reset - but the player doesn't seem to want to load my .ssa subtitles (same names as the videos, of course), regardless of whether I set the DivX Subtitle option to Original, All, or Same Name (yes, I'm paraphrasing the options, as I can't remember the exact names at this very moment. ) from a USB source. Haven't tried it with a disc, yet. ) from a USB source. Haven't tried it with a disc, yet.

It played them before I updated the firmware (from the custom 2.3.2 version, I believe.)If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

	Hi

I have installed DVP5990_37_vb6_v3. I love 8 lines but I have few questions:
 1. Is there any way of displaying longer filenames then 25 on usb ?
 2. How to display CD art all the time wile browsing files?
 - my always appears on bottom and I have to highlight it to show it
and then disappears after selecting some other mp3 file?
 3. How to get to other folder other then scrolling all the way to the top of that folder?

 Thanks
-
Ah, okay. It's no big deal, though. I'll just go back to trying to convince my software there's nothing wrong with the .srt files I convert.Originally Posted by vb6rocod If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

I haven't installed this firmware (yet), but with the original version all you have to do -while in the browser- is to touch REWIND: it will take you to the next higher level.Originally Posted by ojelela

FYI, I have tried to use vobsub (.idx + .sub) subtitle files and I can see Chinese subtitle.Originally Posted by vb6rocod
also, you can try this program to generate .idx + .sub if you only have .srt subtitle:
 http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareTxt2Vobsub.php?b2=1

However, I really wish for Chinese display in the file broswer.. Does this support unicode?

Where is your location? I am in CanadaOriginally Posted by BB88

I tried .idx+.sub before, but any subtitle appeared even English subtitle.

So I do know what happen in my case.

I checked the firmware version on my set and got the informations:

 Version 37.08.51.31
 SUB-VER 08.03.03.03
 8032 05.00.06.05
 Servo 93.88.00.02
 RISC 0A.00.03.01
 DSP 09.59.02.67
 Region Code 1

	Yes, I'm in Canada.

Did you set the Subtitle "On" in the setting menu? Or did you try pressing the "Subtitle" button on the remote? Does it display anything? At least it should say Subtitle 1/1.

I finally got around to upgrading and testing v21 and everything works great.Originally Posted by vb6rocod

Thanks for "testing". For European model I make a version with RISC from 5990 (add support for wmv), also work vertical position. It's a good chance to work also for 3962_37... but is a "risk" to test without a "serial cable".Originally Posted by philips599037
