@u4s
I just tested the same problem you have and its happening to me too. Futhermore, I can't play a disc with AVI files. It shuts off the player as soon as I try to play it
EDIT: Tried 5 other discs full of AVI files that played perfectly using the last firmware. It shuts off the player completely. I haven't tested regular pressed DVD discs yet.

It's very curious, I make this version (v2) like european model (12)....
I don't find any reason to not work.
Well, I make some change, but I'm not sure that now is OK. If not, V1_2_1 is still a good option.

After update, RESET. -

With only the *.VOB files in Philips 5990, it is all continuous play, and navigation is difficult. Is there any possible way for 5990 to read the *.IFO file from a hard drive, and then play *.VOB files according to the menu selection, as if it was a DVD? These functions must be used for a DVD play, but they are not used when a copy of a DVD file structure is present on HD in some directory. This feature would allow to just rip a bunch of DVDs to HD into a nice library, and play them will all the features while the actual DVDs are peacefully sitting on the shelf.
Tip of the day:
If you guys have troubles formatting a new HD with FAT32 in Windows, use this command line program "mkdosfs" :
http://www1.mager.org/mkdosfs/
Basically, you can specify sector size with that, as in :
mkdosfs -v -F 32 -s 32 -n Seagate J:
So with "-s 32" you get sectors of 16KB (32x0.5KB), just make sure your allocation table does not get too big (>10Gb), or the access will become slow. -

Whew! Long but interesting thread!
So this version:
5990_37_vb6_v2_1.rar
http://rapidshare.de/files/40999850/5990_37_vb6_v2_1.rar.html
is the best currently to use with the 5990/37 us player?
We just purchased a new one last night, since our old phillips just died. One thing we saw VERY odd.. maybe someone has seen mention of it elsewhere, is it played fine last night. we turned everything on this morning, and only the red and green color guns were being displayed from the player. Unplugging it and re plugging it in cured that issue, But I'm concerned we got a defective unit. (The store still has a dozen in stock.. should I get a replacement just in case?)
I don't want to flash upgrade what might possible be a bad unit. Also is there a faq thread anywhere for this player?Gary Tabar Jr. -
What cables are you using to the TV? Sounds like component (3 video cables) You may just have a bad cable. If not, maybe exchange.
That sounds like the right flash upgrade. It improves the look of the interface considerably.
Not aware of any guides, but there may be one out there. -
It's an hdmi cable, and I've been using it on our old dvd player now for about a year and a half without any issues.
Seems like unpluggng the player and plugging it back in wouldn't fix a cable issue, unless sit was bumped, but the electrical plug is no where near it.
Since I got it at walmart anyway, I'll flash it, and if it acts up again, just return it for a replacement. BTW, to flash with a flash drive, you just drop the file in the main root of the drive, plug it in, and then turn the player on, correct? (Only flashed from burned discs in the past)
VB mentions resetting the player... how is that done? unplugging it and plugging it back in?Gary Tabar Jr. -
If it's a HDMI cable, and in good condition, it may be a player problem.
HDMI connections using HDCP can also cause problems, but I don't think it would be with the colors. It just wouldn't display.
I don't have a 5990 here at present, so not sure about a reset.
When you plug in the USB drive, the player should see it right away and recognize the flash update and offer to install it. Very simple. When the flash has finished, turn off the player and remove the USB drive or it will want to flash it again on power up. You can re-install the original firmware, but you would need a copy of it.Check with Philips, it may be available. I would be hesitant on returning the player with modified firmware.
-
Yeah my concern as well, but since walmart's return policy is pretty liberal, I'm not too concerned about it.
I'm pretty sure I've already downloaded the most recent official firmware, so I could reflash it, unless of course the unit dies completely.Gary Tabar Jr. -

Yeah I read those recent posts about V2, so didn't even download it for now.

if possible, could the next version sort files on the USB device by their name, and not their timestamp?
Thanks!! -

I just saw that same "orange" issue again this am.. seems to be releated to the player being stone cold sitting unused overnight. Again, unplugging it and plugging it back in resolved the issue, but I'm exchanging it today, because obviously it has some problem.
EDIT: I actually DID visit that link, but it was so clean, and looked so much like the official Philips site I had JUST visited, that I thought it WAS the philips info page again.. LOL! Glad I just double checked that again.. thanks for that head's up!Gary Tabar Jr. -

Yep.. it would be good though to clearly list the latest version, and also the latest official version as well together, in case someone has to roll back, if it isn't already.
I just restored the official version, got my replacement player, did the region free change, and updated to the 1.0 version of this alternate firmware, so I'm good to go again.. hopefully this player won;t have the same issues as the last one.Gary Tabar Jr. -
