thanks for the hint.
In fact, an error crept in when rewriting code, which caused the running process not to terminate correctly when it was intended to.
This should be fixed in the latest beta (v3.0.9.08).

I reverted to ffmpeg 4.4 (April/9/21) presumably 64-bit,
and it's working now.

Invoking ffplay directly from a command prompt, eg.

ffplay.exe testfile.mp4

works in all versions of ffmpeg/ffplay

But now I get this when I select "check times"

Control the video with

ffmpeg -i video.mp4

and check if the respective subtitle streams have frames >0 (otherwise the subtitle is empty).
