  1. Hello,

The TV channel ARTE provide two types of subtitles for its videos:
    • all conversations are subtitled
    • only conversations in different language are subtitled
    For example, for this video
    https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/009403-001-A/les-alsaciens-ou-les-deux-mathilde-1-4/
there are subtitle files where (1) all conversations are subtitled (both German and French) and (2) only German
How to select 2nd file ?
When I test subtitles I get this:
    Code:
    ~/env_video_dnld$ yt-dlp --skip-download --list-subs https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/009403-001-A/les-alsaciens-ou-les-deux-mathilde-1-4/

    de vtt
So, as I mentioned, for french there are two options: vtt and vtt
There is no mean to distinguish them.
When I try to download subtitle file, only "full" subtitles is downloaded.
    Code:
    yt-dlp --skip-download --write-subs --sub-langs 'fr' https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/009403-001-A/les-alsaciens-ou-les-deux-mathilde-1-4/

  4. i assume that you want the french forced subtitles that only show during german dialogue.
if so, in the browser player when you change the subtitle it downloads a whole new m3u8 manifest with only 1 subtitle defined.
yt-dlp grabs all 3 m3u8 manifests via the arte extractor but the problem is that yt-dlp assumes the forced french subs are duplicate and there doesnt seem to be an option to choose that particular one.

    heres a workaround:
    - open devtools in the browser
    - play the video
    - choose the subtitles that you want
    - go to dev tools - network tab
    - filter on "XQ"
    - copy the link to the last one
    - download it with yt-dlp or n_m3u8dl-re

    ie.
    Code:
    yt-dlp --skip-download --write-subs "https://arte-cmafhls.akamaized.net/am/cmaf/009000/009400/009403-001-A/230119064918/009403-001-A_VOF-STF_XQ.m3u8"

You may need to look the dev console and search for m3u8
there are 3 top level m3u8s on the page
    Code:
    009403-001-A_VOF-STMF_XQ.m3u8
    009403-001-A_VA-STA_XQ.m3u8
    009403-001-A_VOF-STF_XQ.m3u8
the sub file you are looking for is
    Code:
    009403-001-A_VOF-STF_XQ.m3u8
Or in the dev console ,find the sub entry and curl it
    Code:
    curl -o VF-FRA.vtt https://arte-cmafhls.akamaized.net/am/cmaf/009000/009400/009403-001-A/230119064918/medias/009403-001-A_st_VF-FRA.vtt
    resulting file is 14.5kb

Yes, it does - I want subtitles to appear only during German conversations.
Regarding your approach using devtools, I know it. But in a slightly different way: network tab, I filter with "vtt". In this way, the "GOOD" subtitle file appears (if the French language is selected in the upper right corner of the ARTE page). Then, by clicking on this "GOOD" vtt, I open it and then save it to the hard disk.
The problem with this approach is that it requires the use of devtools and also a merging tool to embed vtt into the video.
It's not quite compatible with my approach of checking the ARTE channel for interesting videos say once every two weeks.
This way I select the links of all interesting videos and put them in a file and then run the Python script that runs yt-dlp in a loop.
Normally yt-dlp is capable to embed subtitles after downloading (if "GOOD" subtitle could be specified in yt-dlp option).

Alas, you've no choice but to do it this way, ARTE don't flag the subtitle files correctly for yt-dlp to get it. But, based on the m3u8 listed above you might be able to intuit a script.
BTW, when the page loads, the VOF-STF.vtt get loaded into the buffer. (You'll see it load in Dev-tools. The others load on request.)

    For future reference
    VOF-STMF --> Full French
    VOF-STA --> Full German Subtitles
VOF-STF -- French subtitles for German spoken parts.

As for merging, MP4box, ffmpeg of mkvmerge will do it easily.

Well ... in my case (Ubuntu, Mozilla Firefox) it happens differently: when I use filter "vtt" in Network tab the ONLY vtt appears, and this vtt is the "GOOD" one.
I don't see any other subtitles you listed ... VOF-STMF, VOF-STA, etc., but for me it's Ok.
The problem is how to do implement this in some way in Python script.
As you reasonably mentioned, that's impossible.
Concerning merging tools, I'm aware of them and use mkvmerge.
    It works just fine.
But again, the reason I posted my request is if Python automation is possible.
And the answer that emerges from the discussion is "No".
Although negative, it is an answer anyway.
    Sincerely,

I'm sure there is a python module to pull the streams, take a look at Beautiful soup or webvtt.py

I'm sure other user more au fait with python could point you in the right direction. My python-fu is too damn rusty.
    Edit:
And in my case (Arch, firefox) dev console in network and vtt found the initial vof-sta subs. Selecting the others would load them.

  10. the yt-dlp extractor for ARTE just needs a bit of modification to seperate the "SDH/sourds et malentendants" (full subtitle) subtitle from the forced (foreign language parts only).

download the attached file, rename to arte.py
download the source code zip from here, extract to a folder, replace yt_dlp\extractor\arte.py with the above file.
run yt-dlp.cmd (or yt-dlp.sh if using linux) from the directory with similar options as before.

    it should look like this:
    Code:
    >yt-dlp.cmd "https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/009403-001-A/les-alsaciens-ou-les-deux-mathilde-1-4/" --skip-download --list-subs

  11. In my case it doesn't work the same way: whereas "List of subs" options works fine, the downloading instruction chooses the smallest resolution (with -f "bv+ba or without it)
With the previous version of arte.py always the best resolution was kept without any '-f' option.
The only option to achieve the best resolution (which I found) is to check the available formats with "--list-formats", then specify the name which corresponds to 1280x720.

  16. hmmm, there might be something buggy with your yt-dlp as it doesnt have the "[debug] formats sorted by" line
did you build it from source?
can you try just extracting the zip/tar.gz folder, copying over the arte.py and then running yt-dlp.sh?

also, do you get the "formats sorted" line when you run the prebuilt yt-dlp?

  17. Probably the best solution is to update yt-dlp.
As you can see my version is 2022.11.11.
    What version you have?
Concerning resolution, the tool (i.e yt-dlp) takes the last stream in the list.
In my case the last videostream (for unknown reason) is VF-431, in yours, what is logical, is VF-2316

  19. im using the latest version 2023.01.06.

the issue is that your version doesnt seem to be doing any sorting of formats - which yt-dlp has always done by default (or for at least a year or 2)
its not just back to front, its randomly ordered and just so happens that the smallest resolution is the last one, but it could be any of them.

by default yt-dlp will sort in this order "lang,quality,res,fps,hdr:12,vcodec:vp9.2,channels ,acodec, size,br,asr, proto, ext, hasaud, source,id"
    https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp#sorting-formats

you can force it to sort the formats with this argument, but you might want to work out why yours isnt doing it by default
    Code:
    -S "lang,quality,res"
(you can add all the rest if you like, but it wont matter for this video)

  20. I upgraded to the latest version. Seems to be a bug.
    Now it's Ok.
One more question: does exist an option that takes fr_sdh subtitles (if it exist), otherwise takes fr ?

    great.

yt-dlp doesnt seem to have a preference option for subtitles (like it does for video and audio).
    if you set
    Code:
    --sub-langs "fr,fr_sdh"
it will download both those subtitles if available.

    Hello,

I have the same problem : it download the "sourds et malentendants" subtitles instead of the good one, and the --list-subs give this :

    Language Formats
    fr vtt, vtt, vtt
    de vtt
    en vtt

I've update yt-dlp with the latest version :
    python3 -m pip install -U yt-dlp

    yt-dlp --version
    2023.12.30

If i replace arte.py with the version suggested :
    cp arte.txt ~/.local/lib/python3.8/site-packages/yt_dlp/extractor/arte.py

I have this error message :
WARNING: [ArteTV] Skipping stream with unknown protocol API_HLS_NG_MA
ERROR: [ArteTV] 110868-011-A: No video formats found!; please report this issue on https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/issues?q= , filling out the appropriate

    Nota : i have two version of yt-dlp :
    usr/local/bin/yt-dlp
    ~/.local/bin/yt-dlp

Thank you for your help !
