right my grandma left me a reel to reel tape recorder a few weeks ago

it is the machine and tape in it it was used in the early 1970s or could be earlier than that. and what i want to do if it can be done can i play the reel to reel tape and record it to a dvd recorder. my dvd recorder has 2 scart ports and 1 s-video port and 1 rca ports red white and yellow ports and 1 hdmi port

the reel to reel tape recorder is a ferguson serial number 7856 on the back of this machine it says this
it also has some ports at the back of this machine it has inputs P.U. and RAD.

  2. A DVD recorder will need a stable video signal to record anything.

Why don't you just use the audio inputs on a computer to record directly from the audio outputs of the tape deck?

  5. You could do just as well, if you have a good quality Phone, playing the tape through a speaker or hi fi system and recording the material from the speaker, just make sure if you have a dog it doesn;t bark while doing this.

As Jagabo said, But if your computer does not have a proper line level audio in (just microphone in) just get a USB audio interface and record to FLAC or mp3 using Audacity, DVD is for video not audio, though you can make DVD-A discs but not for this application. Once you have the FLAC or mp3 audio files in your computer you can share them on CD's, flash media or internet/social media.
Post pictures of the tape machine especially the connections so we can help you further to the right direction.

I'm not familiar with those labels (maybe non-english?). But it will probably have stereo RCA or 1/4 inch headphone outputs.

Here is a link to all Ferguson tape recorders, Picking one and looking at the back it looks like in the photo below, So it uses DIN connectors, a DIN breakout is widely available online and the only socket useful is probably Radio out, Speakers left and right can be used with an attenuator:

  9. delsam34 hi my ferguson reel to reel tape recorder does not look like the one you shown a picture of my one has the inputs and outputs of PU. AND RAD PORTS but they look like rca ports not thoses ports what you show a picture of.

if i can get maybe some kind of cable or adapter. i could play the reel to reel tape cos the machine is fully working just a bit dusty thats all. and could i record the audio onto a cd or dvd disc with the dvd recorder can i do that way cos i dont have a computer. and i dont think you can do it through a phone like victoriabears said.

also i dont know what type of cable is a PU. cable or a RAD. cable and i dont know where to buy them from

i was thinking if i could get thoses ports PU. and RAD. with some type of cable to the ports on the back of the dvd recorder but i dont know of any cables that will do that. it is only the audio i need from the reel to reel and record onto a dvd or cd disc with the dvd recorder. i dont really want to use a hi fi or speakers system connected to the reel to reel tape recorder like victoriabears said.
also i dont have no hi fi or speakers system.

the ports are just like this one on ebay
Ferguson 3218 Reel To Reel Tape Player Recorder my one is the same as this one it looks like kind of rca ports at the back but it is not it looks like that. and delsam34 picture looks like kind of s-video ports but it is not

You don't need any special cable, just a regular RCA cable that you can still get in a brick and mortar store, However your machine is mono so you would need a mono to stereo RCA splitter, If you can buy online get this, if not have someone with access to buying online get it for you.
Connect the splitter to the back of the machine Radio out, then connect the RCA cable to the two RCA sockets, connect the other end of the RCA cable to the input of your DVD recorder, put a blank CD and record a CD audio, If your DVD recorder is not capable of recording CD audio you will have to make a DVD video using blank DVD discs and just listen to the audio. They do sell audio recorders that record sound from an audio output without computer, depends on the budget from very cheap Chinese crap to high end ones for few hundred dollars.

Here is a cheap audio recorder that records to a SD card or flash drive and takes RCA inputs, Not sure about quality though, but given your recorder is not HiFi this should fit the bill for voice quality recordings.

That's a CD player not a recorder, It probably records to flash media but not to CD's, However there is no mention of any kind of recording feature.

  13. You may be right. I thought I saw one of the video reviews mention recording but I can't find it now. Maybe they meant you could record something on a USB stick (with some other device) then play it on the CD player.
