    Hi all

I'm trying to hard code subs onto avi using Autogordian knot 2.55 via vista.
The problem Im having is after encode takes place & I go to playback, theres 2 sets of subs on the screen ??
Am I missing a setting in the program or a filter ?
Ive loaded latest codecs, installed the Autogordian package- vsob, avisynth, ffdshow, virtual dub etc
but every time I encode an avi with subs this way,2 sets of subs appear,1 bold the other not ??
Thanks for reading & hopefully someone can point me in the right direction, possibly the correct settings etc ?

  2. Did you leave the softsubs in the same folder? That would explain 2 sets of subs displayed on playback. Just move the hardcoded movie to another folder, without the softsubs

Hi I took out the encoded file, the one with the agk extension out of the folder to the desktop
and played it back from there and the 2 sets of subs still appeared.
Ive used AGK before and had successful results, but this time I cant work it out.
I played back avi's that I encoded a while back & they play only 1 set of subs which is good .
Could it be a software overlap or conflict problem at all ?
Ive tried hardcoding on 2 comps now - pc & boot camp mac and still get same results
When installing AGK theres a few small packages inbuilt like vsob etc,now they have utility settings for txt etc should they be checked or unchecked ?
When 'checked' it asks you what directory the virtual dub is in,then freezes ??

  4. Open the AVI in VDub(Mod) and scroll around. If you see only one set of subs, that's all there are and the player is adding the second set, either through it's own subtitle engine, or through DirectVobSub.

Thanks I will try & let you know.
Forgot to mention whilst encoding takes about 1hr 30mins for 800mb
it covers two passes during this time is this normal ?
What would happen if I changed it to run 1 pass only ?
If this doesn't work someone suggested 'Handbrake' ?
    Thanks again

I wouldn't know, since you haven't listed your computer specs. It doesn't sound out of line, though, for a slower computer. The time taken doesn't have much, if anything, to do with the final size but more with the original length of the video.
What would happen if I changed it to run 1 pass only ?
It would take much less time, of course - probably a little over half of the time it takes to run a 2-pass encode. The AutoGK 1-pass for a Target Quality gives you the chosen percentage quality, but you lose all control over the final file size.

ffdshow could also be displaying the extra set of subtitles, too. I don't remember if having both ffdshow and Vobsub set to display subtitles could cause the dual subtitles to show in VirtualDub, though.

Still same problem occuring, encoded avi + subs again using AGK.
Took the resultant avi file from one computer to another.
One which doesn't have vsob, agk, virtual dub or any other editing software installed, just plain old vlc and mplayer.
Also no copies of the same avi or sub files on the second computer either to be sure the player wasnt picking up the
    original srt sub file.

    Same happens again see pic.
    Its a mystery !!

Did you try that? If you see only one, then turn off subs in the players. I have never heard of AutoGK burning 2 sets of subs into an AVI. You didn't use the CTRL-F8 trick to add an additional set of subs into the movie, did you, after already adding them in once? Can you post the log, please?

On opening AGK I chose the file to be encoded seen in the top window.
CTRL + F8 to insert the SRT sub file into the middle window.
Finally Chose a separate destination folder for the output in bottom window.
Set the file size output to be 1gb,which this time AGK split the avi into 2 separate files ?

Secondly I tried the previous encoded avi in virtual dub as you suggested see pic :

The AVI doesn't have subs already embedded onto it ,it came with a separate SRT file in the folder.
If the uncoded AVI is played on its own away from the SRT file (played from desktop) ,no subs appear on the screen which is normal.
If the uncoded AVI is played from the same folder as the uncombined SRT file ,a SINGLE set of
subs appear on the screen through VLC or Media Player which is normal.
This is done automatically on PC + MAC.
I've never gone to the menu bar to choose subtitles 'ON or OFF'
Even when playing the ENCODED AVI ,I've gone to the subtitle OPTION on any player I've used to check the
subtitle selection choice to possibly turn the EXTERNAL ones off,but this option was blanked out ?
Also to be sure I deleted the SRT file completely from the computer.
I don't know of any other way to add the SRT file without doing the CRTL + F8 trick, this method is suggested in AGK's tutorial
    on their site.
I know I haven't added two sets of subs by mistake because I don't have a clue how that could be done
& also I'm using the original uncoded RAW version of the AVI every time ?
I know theres another trick for AGK - CTRL + F9 which doesnt have any Subtitle options in the Menu page.
Also I have previously encoded AVI's this way in the past which turned out successfull, leading me to believe
I had followed the tutorial correctly.
Its only now that I'm experiencing this double sub problem ??
    Quote Quote
  14. Yep, it looks like you did everything right and that there are 2 sets of subs burned into the video. I've never heard of such a thing.
I don't know of any other way to add the SRT file without doing the CRTL + F8 trick, this method is suggested in AGK's tutorial on their site.
If you start with a DVD it's possible to add subs twice, once from the DVD itself and again using the CTRL-F8 trick with outside subs. That's what I was thinking (hoping) had happened.

Do this; open the original AVI and then do a CTRL-F9. Is the "Resizes and places burnt-in subs properly in resulting AVI" box checked? If so, uncheck it and try again. Since you know about CTRL-F9, maybe you used that checkbox once?

Second, that log should also have the AviSynth scripts being used. Can you post them as well. I'd like to see if somehow the subs are being added in twice.

I have Avi Synth 2.5 installed.
Does this run in co-junction with AGK ,possibly in the background like virtual dub ?
Where would I get the AVI SYNTH log details from ?
As I couldn't see these log details in the AGK log window,is there another place where they could be ?

Also accessed CTRL + F9 see pic :
The box you mentioned was 'checked' so I have 'unchecked' this time.
Also ran a quick preview & two sets of subs appeared again ??
However if I know where to get the AVI SYNTH log details from for the post I will run the encode process yet again.

It's normal to have 2 sets of subs appear during the Preview. One is from the embedded subs, as in the AviSynth script, the other from those external subs being displayed by the player. Go ahead and do the encode. With any luck the resulting AVI will have only one set of subs and the problem will have been that box in the Hidden Options you had checked.

You have to remember that any box you check in the Hidden Options remains checked forever unless you come back later and uncheck it. Something you changed for one encode may not be needed for subsequent encodes, so you have to be careful when fooling around in the Hidden Options.

Although I knew about this other hidden feature screen & on looking it at it
I realised I didn't need to alter anything.
As from my previous successfull encodings had been done prior to knowing about this page.
I will run the encode anyway.
Will the AVI SYNTH log be in the AGK window ?

  19. Encoding finished again with 2 sets of subs appearing on screen again ??
And you opened the finished AVI in VDubMod again to check? VDubMod is only going to show what's in the AVI, whereas if you play the finished encode in a player, the separate subs may also get played.

The AviSynth scripts show the subs being loaded only once. So, if there are really 2 subs again, I'm baffled. This looks like a job for the developer, len0x. He can be found at the GKnot Forum at Doom9. If you've never registered there before, then you have to first register and then wait 5 days before posting. I may be able to get the ball rolling before then. Maybe I'm just not asking the right questions, or not looking for the right things.

By the way, open the SRT sub file in Notepad and start looking for the double subs. Either every sub shown twice, or maybe after they've all been listed once, that it lists them all over again. Is there anything at all unusual about that SRT file that you can tell? But I'm just clutching at straws here, because I don't really think that's it.

This is the only AVI you've ever had with this problem? The ones you did before worked OK? Have you tried to work on any since this problem appeared? If not, do you have any others handy on which to test to see if this is the only AVI with this particular problem?

Checked the SRT file & only 1 line of text is visible, there's no duplication ?
Tried in virtual dub again & got the same amount of subs appearing.
Tried in VLC got 2 sets again, tried Realplayer got 2 sets ?
Transfered the avi to another computer, same again 2 sets.
Also tried to encode another different avi & got the same results !
Before I've begun to start encoding any recent avi I've played the raw avi + sub srt text file from the same folder
which plays + shows 1 set of subs on the screen.
As mentioned earlier when you take the avi away from that folder with the srt file in no subs can be seen during playback.
There aren't 2 srt files in the folder either or anywhere else on the computer & the same for the other avi.

  21. This is very weird. Try uninstalling and deleting all versions of vsfilter.dll , including variants in the virtualdub plugins folder, avisynth plugins folder etc... Then reinstall.

When you play the (not re-encoded) video, only 1 set of subs appear on playback, correct? What happens when you disable the subs on playback?

When you play the the re-encoded video, 2 sets appear , correct? What happned when you disable subs on playback?

    Funny you should mention that I uninstalled : vsob.agk,virtual dub,avi synth,ffdshow,xvid,vsfilter pack& any other video codec/editing software.

Everything was uninstalled '3' times to see if the problem would
be rectified, but it didn't really make much difference ?

I also installed the latest versions of the programs listed below if any existed.

This prob with the doubled up subs only started after I reformatted my comp,I always keep the machine with a basic
software content so can't think of any conflicting programs/codecs that may be causing this ?

Playback of the uncoded avi with external subs disabled - plays back video without visual on screen subs.

Playback of the uncoded avi with external subs enabled - plays back video with visual on screen subs 1 set

Playback of the encoded avi with external srt sub file deleted - plays back with 2 sets of subs (see pics above)

Also I've mentioned above is that when playing the 'new sub encoded avi file' the option to turn 'off' the subs is blanked/unhighlightable/unavailable player doesn't recognise that there are external subs to choose from which
should be and is correct if I've deleted the srt sub file completely from the computer.

I've also tried to turn off the subs before deleting the srt sub files too & the result is the same sub off option is blanked/unhighlightable/unavailable

  23. I was thinking some more about this later on. Did your format happen to coincide with an upgrade to version 2.55 of AutoGK? I was thinking along the same lines as poisondeathray, and often an uninstall and reinstall of the programs involved fixes unexplained problems. It's a lot of work, but I'd first suggest uninstalling and reinstalling v 2.55, and if that doesn't fix the problem, then trying a roll back to an earlier version that worked for you before. That's interesting, though, that your problems began after the format. It sounds significant, but I don't know exactly why.

I had AGK ver 2.45 or 2.40 working perfectly on my laptop (see spec above)
which I had successfully encoded quite a few avi's with srt sub text files.
Resulting in an encoded avi with embedded subs showing only 1 set no problems.
I had to reformat my laptop due to a virus after only being on the net for 20 mins
After reformatting using system recovery discs + vista sp 1 + various bits of software including
the earlier version of AGK, I decided to encode an avi + srt file thinking nothing of it.
Thats when the probs started after a few attempts to install + uninstalling agk, vobsub, vsfilter packs, ffdshow etc packages I installed the new version of AGK 2.55 thinking it may fix an issue as you've mentioned but it hasn't made the slightest bit of difference ??
Unfortunately these recovery discs come with a lot of pre-packaged software inbuilt & I think that
some of that software is conflicting with what I'm trying to do with AGK.
But don't know what area to start looking.
Again referring back to line 1 of this post, I know I uninstalled all of the pre-packaged software via
a uninstaller program as most of that software was no good, leaving a bare version of vista + the basics if you like.
I'm not sure if I did this as thoroughly this time round as it is takes forever
Is there any way to decipher or strip a 'Recovery Software Discs' to remove all the unwanted software, just leaving the operating system + drivers ?
Like an unslipstream sort of program ?

Put your specs in your profile so we don't have to scroll back to see them. If they are in your profile then your posts have a new icon - Computer Details - that we can mouse-over to see them.
