    Hello guys,

I would like to repeat my question again:

Do the last firmwares - vb6_v4 and v4_1 - (here and on vb6rocod's web site http://vb6rocod.euracks.com/dvp5990_37.php) support Cyrillic (CP1251)?

    Thank you in advance!

I was wondering if there was any update I could apply to the 3982 in order to get the wonderfully addictive long file names =D

I saw on Phillips site that that the 3962 shares the update but certainly don't want to assume a modified version the same applies

any assistance with this matter would be greatly appreciated oh wise ones ...

With 4.1 firmware is there a max number of folders that player will read through usb?
I have external hd connected but only some folders with music appear.
Also, only 2 sub folders deep will appear in file browser. ie. root plus two sub folders.
    Any1 else have this trouble?
What are the other firmwares with 8 lines per file browser page and 42 characters file names?
    Thx

It's still 300 folders with 648 files each, AFAIK. I don't think that has ever changed. If you bury the files too deep, then the unit may have a hard time reading them.

I just flashed to this firmware upgrade. I am not sure where things went bad, but I now have a defunct player I read the description of how to try to bring this thing back to life, but it seems like it is a bit over my head now. In my house we have three laptops, no desktops. The oldest one was probably made in 2005, but it still doesn't have a serial port. Any way I can go about fixing this thing? Do I have to have a serial port?

No, You can get a usb to serial adapter. But, It's probably better for you to purchase a new one. They are really cheap.

I will mainly be using this play to play my non region 1 dvds. However, I read in the dvdhacks section on this player that you're only limited 10 plays of other region discs before it locks into region 1 only and can't be changed again. My question is does a firmware update make it region free permanantly?

Secondly, which firmware update should I do?

Lastly, do I just unrar the files onto the usb drive or do I burn it onto a cd? By the way I'm new to updating firmware.
Is no need to make any update...
Enter Setup, go to "Preference Page" and enter 138931. On Tv you will see Region Code x. With arrow key change to 0.
Hi, I just bought 5990/F7 yesterday after read many great comments about it. I went through all the posts and did not find the firmware to be able to watch Vietnamese in srt files. Maybe I overlooked. If this mod firmware existed, could someone please give me direction? If not, can vb6rocod or some expert help me to write one? It's Unicode UTF-8, and usually in Arial or Times News Roman font.

    Thank-you in advance.

Dunno if Vietnamese subs are supported. If not you could always use any of

    Txt2Vobsub
    AviAddxSubs
    Subtitle Creator

to make idx/sub from your text files.

    I will upgrade my DVP5990.

Could you please tell me about file DVP5990_37_vb6_v32_CP.rar. What it is for? Do I need it.

    Thanks a lot again.

CP is from "Code Page" , for users who use other language for subtitles (divx files).

A friend of mine needs a new standalone but the 3260 is no longer available. So I suggested the 3350/3360 (HDMI) but what about features? Is your modded firmware comparable in terms of idx/sub support? Thx.

Both 3350/3360 support sub/idx (for 3360 version without "Load ORG"). 3350 is not so good like 3260 (filebrowser limit to 20 char), 3360 is better, 5990 is much better...

Yes, by kicking Philips (support) in the nuts for allowing such an old bug to slip into a current official firmware.

  22. Can anyone tell me about the difference between files DVP5990_37_vb6_v32_All_Logo.rar and DVP5990_37_vb6_v4_1.rar? Which one do I need use to upgrade my Philips DVP 5990?
I used DVP5990_37_vb6_v32_All_Logo.rar, but now I am wondering if I had to use DVP5990_37_vb6_v4_1.rar.

    Thanks a lot.

Mmh, from what I've read the specs are very similar, only that the former has no Divx Ultra which don't rip to anywhere. Or do you mean in terms of your modded firmware? Otherwise I'd go with the 3360 since both have HDMI.

    I've a 5990 and I'm curious -- what's the big diff' between mine and the 3360?

  25. To All,

Think twice before upgrading your DVD player using DVP5990_37_vb6_v32_All_Logo.rar file.
Member Godey screwed up his DVD player trying to upgrade it. I had the similar issue with my new DVP 5990 when it never asked for any prompts but just said updating. I got lucky because i did not know what to do and waited about 5 minutes before I pulled out the USB drive.
However, in 4 days my DVP 5990 turned red. Now it shows everything in red color when I use HDMI output. I don’t think it has anything to do with upgrade, but I cannot return or fix it using my warranty because I upgraded the player.
    So, think twice.

    Thanks.

That's relatively common with the 5990 (orange/red-appearing display when using HDMI), apparently. I've had it happen a few times to me, and I've even heard of people experiencing it with the stock/original firmwares.

All you need to do is unplug your 5990 from the wall (power outlet) for at least ten to thirty minutes, with the TV off, then plug the 5990 back into the power outlet, and turn the TV back on (HDMI). That should reset the player.

  27. As Far As We Can Tell - The Latest FirmWare (DVP5990_37_vb6_4_1.rar) Seems *Completely OK* When Tried With Three Different Philips DVP 5990 Players Manufactured On Different Dates (37/Mfg Aug 2008 + 37/Mfg Jan 2009 + F7/Mfg Sept 2009) - This Is All Related To Several Posted Hints By Others Suggesting A Possible Problem With Modified FirmWare And The More Newly Manufactured Players.

    NOTES:
Details Of Our Testing Conditions, Procedures And Results Were Similar To Those We Described Earlier.

Just unplug the DVD player from AC and plug it back in - all colors will be back to normal
It has nothing to do with the firmware version.
BTW who is still selling 5990-s? My local Walmart has only 3982s...
I guess it's time to take care of BDP5005s
