  1. Hi all,

I have just finished my first VCD (Yippee). Its taken me ages but i have finally got there. The question i have is, 'Is it possible to clean up the picture'?. What i mean by this is that the picture is very red and is slightly blurry. I used Smart Ripper, DVDx and Nero to make the VCDs but wanted to know if there is an easy way to clear the picture up, at what stage i do this and any links to guides you may know.

    Thanks guys.

    Richard

p.s. What is Warez? It warns me not to link to it when putting on posts but i have no idea what it is!!

  2. VCD is not the most detailed. Also DVDx it not very good.
TMPGenc is free if you are doing VCDs.

P.S. read the glossary on your left.

I think by its very nature VCD naturally lacks picture definition. Try SVCD or CVD if you want to improve on this.

  4. if you dont have a dvd player that places svcds or cvds - try TMPGEnc but spli the files into maybe as many as 3 parts - to keep the quality up

Or if your dvd player will play xvcd you can try increasing the bitrate use 2 pass vbr and split the file up to 2 parts

You description if blurry is vague enough to be interpreted as normal VCD quality. But it definatley shouldn't look like it has too much red in it, even if the original did. You can easily fix the too much red in TMPEGNC.

  7. Hi again. Thanks for the replies. Im a bit confused about 1 part though. Im looking into the TMPGEnc program but what does this take place of? Does it do the ripping, the conversion or the burning. Also what is the main diff between a vcd and svcd as in the replies some people suggested xvcd and all sorts.

Thanks again. Its really appreciated as ive looked through all the topics but am coming up with blanks.

There are a lot of different formats for video disks. In ascending quality order, some of them are: VCD (Video CD), SVCD (SuperVideoCD), DVD (Digital Versatile Disk - or for some - Digital Video Disk).

Between VCD and SVCD and between SVCD and DVD there are several variations "tweaking" the resolution or the bitrate to achieve incremental increases in quality.

More info on the specifics are available in the top links to the left.

Regarding Tmpgenc, the main purpose of this program is to "encode" a video file into MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. It also does side-things, like resizing the movie, performing some filters, etc.

In a glance, the whole process from DVD to VCD is:
    1. Ripping the video out of the DVD
    2. Encoding the video and audio stream into MPEG-1
    3. Recording the resulting video as a Video CD.

I will agree with you in being puzzled with some of the guides, as some of them are quite advanced or geared towards specific subjects. Search more and you will find quite a few basic ones to lead you through.

And, of course, ask around. I think the motto is: In the newbie section, there are no stupid questions...
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
