This is for all of you capturing gurus out there. I have a very outdated pc and just want backup a few old VHS tapes. My system looks something like this - AMD-K6 350mhz, 20gb, 256mb, win 98, very old video and sound card. I am not a complete newbie, i have got encoding and burning down. I will be building my own pc real soon, but until then was looking for a video card that will allow me to do this, and be good for the new pc I want. Any and all input is appreciated.

PS - I want to spend $150 or less

I assume you want a capture card not video card? Read my recent comments on the avermedia card (<$100 canadian) under capture topics "What do you guys think of this product" and "video from vcr to computer on an old computer". You should have no problem capturing with it and it will be very good on the new system. Capture to YUY2 or yu12 for now and use the divx 4.01 to 4.12 codecs with fastest settings and about 2000 bitrate or better. (Huffy and Picvideo will need too much hd space) for you.
Its compatible with all capture apps I have used and great for the price. There are tricks which are app dependant to get the most out of your captures when you have a slower system but this is true with all cards.

  3. ok my opinion...and I've said it here for over a year..... software encoding is the way to go.....period. much more scaleable and the cpu is becomming so powerful that the hardware stuff will be left in the dust.

kind of like my hadrware mpeg encoder that hung off my video card 5 years ago.
