Here's a question:
Say a person has an HDTV DVR box that has, among other things, component video out. They also have a DVD recorder that accepts component video in. What would happen if they were to play back an HD program recorded on the DVR and attempt to record it onto a DVD+/-R(W) in the DVD recorder? Would the DVD recorder be able to receive/process the HD signal from the DVR?
Just curious.
Thanks,
Chris

No, it wouldn't work. Current DVD recorders on the market don't downsize an HDTV MPeg2_TS input.

But your DVR probably does. Connect S-Video to the input of the DVD recorder and record. Normally this would be letterbox 720x480i if recorded HQ.

Thanks for the reply. So is the S-Video method the only way of doing this? If so, what is the point of manufacturing a DVD Recorder with component video in capability?
 Thanks,
 Chris

What model are you looking at?Originally Posted by bigkromedogg

Analog component has potenital for higher quality than S-video but as far as I know they are all limited to 480i over YPbPr. 480p with true 16:9 would max the DVD format. I wish someone would make one of those.

HD recording is currently PC/Mac only at the consumer level and the cable company determines what can be recorded.

	Thanks for the reply.
The DVR is a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HD. The DVD recorder is a GoVideo RV4000.

I have a SA8300 too and tried to pull some of my recordings off via the firewire port. Unfortunately Comcast in my area hasn't enabled the firewire ports. You might have luck doing that though depending on your provider.

The GoVideo RV4000 doesn't have component inputs. It doesn't even have S-Video in, only RF and composite NTSC (RCA).Originally Posted by bigkromedogg

The only recorders capable of HD recording use D-VHS tape over IEEE-1394.
