  1. I'm currently trying the direct approach. I extracted the Nero directory from the "Nero551056.exe" using 7-zip.

Then renamed to "Nero55", and moved to "C:\Program Files\Ahead".

From what i've learned from the SDK documentation, this old APP should use the new API.

As soon as i launched the old application i saw the registration dialog and had to dig up my old Serial Number.

I'm curious to see if the garbage i'm trying to avoid is in the application or the API. All seems well for now, i'll report back later.

  2. OK, the API seems to work just fine but the standard functions of 5.5 gave me a few errors (but didn't crash)

The project Wizard pops up every time, no matter what you do.

The "Sounds" in preferences in 5.5 keep stealing the registry settings but 6.6.0.3 won't take them back.

Pegasus ImageXpress Library missing - when i tried to start a new VCD project. I can't seem to locate which DLL to register for it to function. (now working)

    and then there's this

but who uses Nero's MPEG-2 encoder anyway? It could probably be installed with the standard installer.

Does the MPEG-2 plugin replace the MPEG(1) plugin?

Burned a standard data CDRom with conservative settings on Pioneer 107 and i can't find anything wrong with it so far.

Now the question is....Does the 5.5 application address the dual layer functions of the newer API? - I can't answer this, 107 is only a single layer writer.

No, it just allows you to Use Nero to Convert to Mpeg2.

Yup, i just installed it (Mpeg2 plug). So it looks like the MPEG-1 encoder won't be functional either. - Who cares?

I did the 7-zip extraction of 5.5.10.56 and put it in C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero55

No wizard errors, no other errors. None so far.

But it STILL does not see the Pioneer 109.

It probably will not ever see it.

It locked up when i used the new DLL. I had to use the old DLL with the newer CDROM.CFG.

  10. You might want to get rid of some files from the Nero55 directory so they can't be used by nero.exe.

    neroAPI.dll
    WNASPI32.DLL

    .

    --edit--

Looks like i broke Nero's ASPI, but the Nero WNASPI32.DLL i installed as system ASPI seems to have taken up the slack.

    Did that too, no change.

    WARNING WARNING WARNING !!!!
Nero Info Tool reboots a PC using the 109 drive. I read about it before, but did not remember until I heard the clacking on the hard drives and the screen went black on me.

So the Info tool doesn't support the new drive? Does the latest Nero officially support it?

Care to try a Nero ASPI system layer?

I can't find the info page at GoldenHawk i used to install Nero's WNASPI32.DLL as the system ASPI but i remember how to do it.

I guess a few people using CDRWin had trouble with external devices (USB, FireWire) so GoldenHawk reported that you can install the Adaptec ASPI, and replace the WNASPI32.DLL in the System32 directory with the one from Nero's download page to enable it.

I was wondering at the time how to make Nero 6 more stable, so i tried it. I don't have any external devices but i can tell you that all my ASPI dependant software started working alot better. (Exact Audio Copy, CDex, burnatonce, CDRDAO, ISOBuster)

Aside from your unique drive its the last difference i can see between our situations.
