hi all, i am currently having problems burning dvd with nero 6, i am only quite new to this and am sure it is only a minor hitch.
The setup, or decoding i have dvd43, encoding ,dvd shrink and burning nero 6, I have succesfully burnt aproximately 35 dvd's and suddenly i have only been able to burn 1 out of the last 15. I am able to decode and save files to my harddrive so i believe the decoding/ encoding is ok. But when i come to burn each time is different but the burn process fails at some point anywhere from 8% to over 70% into the process. I will attach one of the nero logs if some one can read it coz its all mumbo jumbo to me. at present i am using powerwave dvd-r of which i have had 1 success, previously i was using mediatrak dvd+r of which i had 35 succsess followed by a run of 15 straight failures. help!!!!!!! thanks in advance.
    john

Try some different media. Just because it seems the same as the media that worked, it may be different. The name of the media often doesn't reflect who really manufactured it. A media change is the cheapest and easiest one to try if you are having burning problems.

And BTW, you should edit out your Nero serial number (First line of your log)

    And welcome to our forums.

EDIT: I removed the SN for you.

    jjob222,

To expand (slightly) on redwudz's excellent advice...the disks you're trying to burn may say "powerwave" on the container, but the burning software knows them as "CMC MA - G. AE1", which is not something that's likely to produce good burns. Once you factor in the waste produced by failed burns, better media can end up being cheaper in the long run, and a lot less frustrating. Here's a good reference page to help you determine what quality media is.

The log also shows that during the burn, there was only 26 MB available of your 256 MB of RAM. Bringing your RAM up to even 512 MB would certainly make your computer run more smoothly.

Even though redwudz already welcomed you...since this is a friendly place, I would also like to welcome you to VideoHelp.

ok thank you for the advice, i will say though that the media i had the 35 success and the 15 failures with were all out of the same pack, so presumably i would think all manufactured by the same people and of the same quality to each other.
also to add i have just downloaded a copy of dvdfab and had a successful burn straight away, heres hoping it was not just a fluke! Also on setting up dvdfab it gave me an option to enable direct access memory which i now have done.
oh and thank you for the welcome.
    and thanks again, john.

I'm like the most useless person to tell you this (if what I'm about to tell you is even the problem that is) but I couldn't burn dvds after getting an update for Nero6 (it's tha latest before they moved onto Nero7 I think). DVD Shrink + GuiForDVDAuthor, using Nero, couldn't burn DVDs so after googling the error message I found that it was a problem with this Nero6 update and the solution was to totally uninstall Nero and reinstall the previous version of Nero6, which worked.

I don't know what the actual problem was (or the techy language) but it was the to do with the update... if you have even updated(?)

    jjob222,

The typical pattern with lower quality media is the lack of consistency, within the same batch, or even more so between different batches (which may have been manufactured by a completely different manufacturer).

In your first example, the quality variance (in the same batch) resulted in about 1/3 of the disks wandering into "unusable" territory, and were scrap, which means the price per usable disk was 50% more than what you thought you were paying...and that's not even factoring in your wasted time. Even worse, the disks that did appear to burn okay, even if they verified correctly, may very well have errors that are concealed by the built-in error correction on the disks, thereby reducing the error correction that could have been available for actual damage to the disk (scratches, smudges, etc.).

It can get much worse...as is evident with your current media, where you have 88% scrap. For what you're paying per usable disk for those, the best media available (producing 0% scrap) would be a real bargain. Also, you've got to wonder how good the one burn that appeared to work really was.

Generally, bad burns are connected to the drive or media. Although the burning software can influence the outcome (sometimes radically), it's more likely the successful DvdFab burn was getting a good disk in the luck of the draw, especially considering the media is CMC. If you want to rule out a software problem entirely, try ImgBurn. If it can't consistently complete burns, you know the problem isn't software related.

Just so you know, the burn log says your burner already had DMA enabled.
