    Hello!
I've tried backing up SWE2 first using dvd2one and then Instant Copy 7.
I've now lost seven disks in the process
I'm using the same media as I did successfully before I tried this movie and strangely, having tried to backup a different movie, it worked fine.
Is it possible I have a bad batch of media (I bought them all at the same time from the same source) or does my burner not like SWE2?
The error messages I'm getting range from "command sense error" to "calibration error..."
    Anyone any ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Will

Make that the last eight dvd-r's lost
I ran a backup of Ali when I left for work this morning (Tues) and having gone home for lunch have a 'command sense error...55'
This time I used the 30 day demo of recordnow 4.5 and my backup of Ali failed at what looks like near to the end of the disk.
I've ran it again and this time used datasafe rather than ritek (although I used 80+ ritec in the past - as I mentioned in my first post).
I'll know tonight whether it's worked or not but clearly I can't continue on the basis of 'lose one, record one, lose one, record one', things become a little expensive that way, ot to mention taking twice the time!
Could it be a hardware issue perhaps?

Sounds like either bad media, or your burner is dying.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the post.
If it is the burner dying, how do you suggest I convince the store to take it back without sounding like...
    a) it *might* be the media and
    b) I don't know what the hell I'm talking about?
    Thanks,
    Will

Copy down the exact error messages, then contact your burner's tech support. They can tell you if thess are hardware based error messages.

Silky31, about two months ago I had that same message "CALIBRATION ERROR" and when that happened I could not get my burner to burn anything fortunately it was on the 30th day from purchasing and BestBuy took it back and I purchased it again and had the money to get the 3 year warranty for $100. How long ago did you purchase it.

I've had it since about November 2002, although if I can convince the tech support guys at the store that I've tried every concevable option before conceeding it's hardware I'm sure they'll either refund or exchange.
My worry is they'll blame it on media when I'd been using the same batch for the month before with no problems.

As long as the media you are using is compatible with the burner you should have no problems. Do you have a warranty?

  9. Another suggestion would be to buy a DVD-RW and just erase it instead of disposing of so many coasters.

I guess there's something to be said after all for those $20 extended warranties. My Pioneer A05 had just that since it was on sale anyway and it didn't alter the price that much...

  11. Obviously you don't live in Britain! Extended warrenties here are a total rip off, sometimes costing more than the goods they are covering! Shops usually make more money off the warrenty than off the sale of goods in the first place. If the burner is less than 12 months old you will be covered under the manufacturers guarantee - irrespective of the media used.

energy80s, i know what you mean!
although i did have -one- good experience with extended warranties, several years ago i bought a P133 laptop from PC world with a 5 year warranty, 4 and a half years later it died, and obviously they couldn't replace it, so i had to have a brand new celeron 850 laptop instead! i was more than a bit pleased, especially as at the end of the five years they offered me another five years for only £80! i don't think that's bad considering in another 3 years time i can accidentally drop it down the stairs and get a dual Pentium 5 20ghz laptop!

    My burner doesn't support dvd-rw, just dvd-r and dvd-ram.
It's a Panasonic LF-D311 which has been wonderful, up until now.

The datasafe I ran at lunch-time has worked fine.
I'll try another datasafe now and if it works will know it's a dodgy set of blanks.

Anyone ever sent a set of dvd-r's back in the UK?
I got these from blankdiscshop.co.uk, or 121cdr as they used to be called.

Is it unlikely to assume my burner has now stopped liking the ritek?
Strangely enough, at the same time I started losing dvd-r's Prassi Primo DVD started giving me error messages Click here for the error messages.
It's unlikely the two problems are related, right?

  17. Well if your calibration error is actually the Power Calibration Error you may have a drive dying.

Once I started getting that error in Nero on a Plextor CD-RW drive it went downhill fast...

Typically as I understand it a drive does a power calibration using a predetermined test area on the disk to see how much laser energy is needed to burn the disk properly....

I'm guessing on my Plextor that error ment the laser was wearing out...

Some different brand disks worked after that error started appearing (My guess was they needed less power to burn but shortly afterwards it died totally. Plextor support When told the error message without any other questions or problems generated an RMA for that drive.

    Good luck
