  1. Like many folks, I just want to watch a movie from time to time...not launch the space shuttle. Unfortunately the procedural aspect seems similar, so in doing one I may end up qualified to do both. I can't find the Space Shuttle Launch Procedure Forum, so...here I am.
So...first let me say that I am not at home and can't look at anything right now. Perhaps that's not the most best timing, but since I have a moment...
We just purchased a Samsung 32" HDTV. It is replacing an Olevia HDTV that is only about a year old. I went to hook up our DVD player (an older Sony) and cannot get a quality image (actually...barely any image at all). It worked fine on the Olevia, and I hooked it up the same way.
    Details from memory:
    • Using the basic red/white/yellow cable
    • Using "Component" in the menu
    • Tried plugging into the other inputs with no result
    • The DVD setup doesn't seem intuitive to me...I didn't mess with it.
    • DVD screen show up but is in B&W and snowy.
    • Inserting a DVD (just a regular commercial disc) and pressing play just shows B&W snow and horizontal lines.
Not sure what other info I can supply from here, but I'll try...or come back this evening.
    Thanks all...in advance.

    - Red-White(Audio)/Yellow(Video) is composite. Component is Red-Green-Blue(Video)/Red-White(Audio) - sometimes audio isn't included. This is probably what you seeing for issues.

With component you have the option of using progressive output which your player may be defaulting to. Though your TV by default is progressive, by using composite or s-video you can only do interlaced.

I'd recommend getting a DVD (or BluRay) that has HDMI out. It'll will be able to output the (usually) native progressive commercial DVD in progressive. You'll notice a MUCH better picture. The HDMI cable includes both audio and video connections.

At 32" (and probably 720p or 768p - need to know model of Samsung to be sure), you won't notice much if any difference between a DVD and BluRay picture with an adequate upscaling DVD player and a progressive connection.

Note: If you're TV and older Sony DVD player have it, use the S-video (round 5pin plug, looks like any older mouse/keyboard plug) connection. You'll get a little bit better video than composite.

    In order of preference:

    - Composite, R/W/Y - 480i only, stereo audio.
    - S-Video, Round 5-pin seperate R/W for audio - 480i only, stereo audio.
    - Component, R/G/B + R/W - 480i to 1080i, stereo audio (though some connections may be 1080p)
    - HDMI, one cable - upto 1080p and full surround audio.

Note: Other coax and optical connections maybe be available seperately for audio for all connections.

If you can give us your make and model of your TV, dvd/bluray player and/or receiver we can get more specific.

Note2: For shuttle launch, simply swith the red and white cables. Press the 4, 7, Input and Select buttons simultaneously on the TV remote.
    Have a good one,

  3. Hi and Thank You!
    Okay...so may I clarify/ask
-If I want to use my current DVD player I need to...?
-Select Composite using the current cable (R/W/Y), or...
-get a new cable (B/R/G + R/W) and select component.
    Alternatively...get a newer player w/ HDMI
Thanks again...I am crystal clear on the shuttle launch procedure...still wonky on the TV setup.

you can use your current dvd player for a better picture "if" you have a dvd player that has an HDMI output..you'll get a much better picture than you would if you used the ole red white yellow standard..or if possible the s-video connection in the back...its a little bit better than RWY connections as neomaine has mentioned

all newer dvd players these days, i should say most, have an hdmi (upscaling) input/output so your not lost on availability

somethin like this would be fine

    Philips 3560

If you want a decent quality player then a Pioneer is a good bet

1 - Yes, if no HDMI or component connections.

2 - That's impressive. Not too many people are comfortable swithing cables.

Special Note: If getting new cables, monoprice.com is your friend. For the prices they charge at some B&Ms, you can get a new BluRay player. Actually, for ~$30, you can get an upscalling (HDMI, probably not much component these days) DVD player. For <$100, you can get a basic BluRay player.

We'll need a more specific error message. I got the Samsung C6500 this past winter. Been working great. Downloaded a few widgets for it, nothing I play with regularly.

I've got a wired connection from my router to a ethernet hub in the entertainment center. The C5000 along with my receiver, Wii and WDTVLive are wired to the hub.

  8. Well...after three hours on the phone with Samsung...then ATT...the Samsung...turned out that the 6500 doesn't support WEP encrypt. So, rather than reconfigure to WPA2 (or otherwise) along with every device in the house...I exchanged it for a 5300 which play discs...that's all I wanted in the first place. It is wireless ready for use with an adapter if I decide to tackle that bear another day.
