    Something weird is happening here...

So I downloaded mkvmerge GUI from this site to remove some unwanted audio tracks and subtitles from a few movies I downloaded...

The files were 'fixed' easily and everything was great until... drum roll please... i went back to my folder where these movies are located and my hard drive suddenly goes into a frenzy!

I mean the noise coming from it makes me think something is going to explode, it's like a buzzing sound which goes on for about 8 to 10 minutes every time i open this particular folder! Resource monitor shows my HDD is working at 100% ... something is obviously wrong. The process that's doing all of this is explorer, apparently, and I'm a little confused as to what the heck is happening and why!

This never happened before i edited the mkv files and removed the unwanted audio... and doesn't happen in any other folders or files.

Anyone have any ideas what the heck is going on here?

Perhaps the files are fragmented into thousands of pieces. Try a disk defrag.

Nope, defrag was done twice and I still have this problem.

Definitely makes me wonder about this "tool" I downloaded here...

What do you have for the folder "view" ? Try setting it to "list" to see if it helps.

How big are these files? Could the AV be scanning them? The MKVtoolnix package / mkvextract gui
have been around for a long time, no problems reported. If you'd like some third-party opinions, navigate to
virustotal.com and submit the file you downloaded for an AV report from 20 or so different companies.

I'm just guessing, but the 'merge' in the toolname makes me think of two files. If that is two files on the same drive, in different locations but being read at the same time, the head will be whipping back & forth, which could make the noise you describe.

Try copying the data files to a DVD, and then erase their folder from the HD and see if the prob goes away. The HD is more valuable to you right?
