You can't just rip a DVD to your HD and burn it like a CD/computer disc. Not unless you rip the entire DVD.
It sounds like you only ripped the VTS_XX files that had 'the main movie.' But not the VIDEO_TS files or the other VOB files.
Take a look at http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=109346
There are basically 3 ways to go:
1) If you have a DVD-5/layer 1 disc. Use DVD Decryptor to make ISO file of disc, then burn that ISO file. Perfect backup.
2) If the disc is DVD-9/layer 2, but main movie is less than 4.7GB. Rip THE ENTIRE DVD to the HD, then use IDOEdit to strip out the main movie (and desired audio and subtitle streams). This makes new set of VIDEO_TS/VTS_XX files, which you can then burn. (scroll down to 'the enemeywithin's post on how to use IFOEdit in the above link).
3) If the disc is DVD-9/layer 2, and main movie is creater than 4.7GB you have to re-encode the movie at a lower bitrate to fit it on one disc OR spilt it onto two DVD-Rs.
