    Hi,

I have ripped a DVD using DVD Shrink, the result was over 48 VOBs, BUPs & IFOs, a couple of which are big (~1GB) while the rest are much smaller VOBs (DVD Extras and stuff).

So what I've done is select the big VOBs and and a handful of other smaller VOBs. They all start with VTS_02_X. Then I've used EditIFO to create new IFO & BUPs for my selected 9 VOBs. Everything seems fine, but then when I go to burn them (using Nero) I get a message that the file fails DVD compliance something about DVD-Video files compliance test failed. The resulting DVD-Video might be unplayable!

    Please help....

Note I no longer have the actual DVD I had to return it my friend, so I can't re-rip it using another tool. All I have to work with is VOB files.

    Thanks

Yes, this rather infamous Nero error. I know what Nero is telling you, but I'm not sure I can describe it very well. I will try. What Nero is saying is that one of the VOBs you did not select is critical to the DVD structure and your burn may not play because it's missing. What you need to do is this:

    1) Use VOBBlanker to get rid of any VOBs you don't want to keep. It will reduce those VOBs in size as much as possible and just put what are stubs in their places, but the DVD will still work.
    2) Feed the output of VOBBlanker with your blanked VOBs into DVD Shrink and then shrink that. The resulting output won't give you this error.
    3) You really should not burn DVDs with Nero. Use the free ImgBurn instead. Nero does some things in DVD burning that are incredibly stupid, like putting your BUP and IFO in the same block. BUPs are emergency use backup copies of IFOs so that if an IFO is unreadable, the BUP can (hopefully) be read and the DVD will stay play. By putting them in the same block, Nero assures you that if that block goes bad, the BUP is now useless and its entire purpose for existence is destroyed. The odds of this happening are quite low, no doubt, but there is no reason to do this. Yet Nero does it anyway.

    Thanks jman98!

Can you please elaborate on what you mean by the following statements:

    1. "get rid of any VOBs you don't want to keep"? As I mentioned above, I have hand-selected a total of 9 VOBs and I need all of them. So I'm not sure what do you mean by "get rid of any VOBs you don't want to keep".

    2. "and just put what are stubs in their places" I'm not sure I understand what you mean here.

    Please explain...

Now, regardless of the above I went ahead and tried to do what you've suggested. Generated new IFO & BUP files, then tried to burn the newly generated files with my original 9 VOBs (using Nero always), still I'm getting the same error!

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

    Thanks

P.S. I will try using the other burner you've suggested and report back. Thanks

An essential piece of information necessary for set-top DVD players is missing from the files you have. That is the reason for the error message. If you no longer have the original DVD, then jman98's advice won't help you.

When you don't own the original DVD, there's an additional problem that you should be aware of. It's spelled out in the forum rules, in the section on "Fair Use". Members who want to obey those rules can't help you.
