I was wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this. Recently I have been trying to play my avi. files on my computer. Now I have some which I burned to cd a long time ago, they were 100% virus free. But every avi. I try to play on my media player or Divx player crashed my computer even the ones I knew were free of viruses. I get that blue screen telling me a fatal error has occurred. I am assuming virus. I was just wondering if anyone might know what virus this is or if it is possibly some kind of missing file on my computer which may have been erased by accident. My mpegs and everything else works fine. It is just avi.
Any help would be welcome, thanks ahead of time

That's what I "Initially" thought. But, every AVI. file I have does it. While WMA, MPEG, MPG, WMV all work fine. find it very hard to believe that every AVI file on my computer is corrupt. But nevertheless I thank you for the reply.

Hi, I am not trying to "BUMP" this to the top of the list, but I was curious if anyone else may know what this problem may be? I am getting ready to wipe my hard drive and I would like to avoid that at all costs if possible!

if it plays everything else fine, then more then likely its a corrupt codec.
download media player from microsoft and reinstall instead of update.
most divx players use the same codecs and etc that mplayer does.
I'd also reinstall any codecs you have, such the divx codecs and etc. -
What people tend to forget is that EVERYTHING Microsoft is memory intensive!!!! You might want to type MSCONFIG at the RUN window, then go to the STARTUP tab and see how many programs are running in the background. I've seen people running 25-30 items in the list and didn't know it.
Also, do a "CTRL+ALT+DEL" to bring up the TASK MANAGER and see what is running there as well. Anything not imediately needed you can highlight and click END TASK to stop them. Then try running your AVI files.
Microsoft also recommends no more than 30 icons on the desktop. I'm running about 50 myself. Most programs today put their own on when installed, not counting the shortcuts we do for our own needs. All of these take memory. It may not be much, but each item in memory is separated from each other and that separation is unused space as well. So the more you have going on the more memory is used.
Try these and let me know how it works.
