  1. Hi all,

Next to zero experience with video editing but I need to be able to do a specific task for a unity project I'm working on, not even sure this is possible.

In the same way you can grab a specific section of an image, for instance. 2048x2048 section of a much larger image, you can move the cut box to the section you want to grab and copy it to a new image, job done.

Is there a way to do this with a video? I want to be able to grab a specific section of the on screen video, again perhaps 2048x2048 of a larger format video file. The video file is likely to be a scene such as a forest or similar so no people's heads or any specific action to contend with losing.

    Is this possible?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  2. Many video encoding softwares have a cropping feature. Is that all you want?

Yes to be honest. If at all possible just as simple as possible like in an image editing package. Or even if I have to manually type the amount of pixels to remove from each size and top and bottom of video would work. It would be easier if there was a visual though where I could drag a crop tool around a frame of the video and stick with that section right the way through.

    Thanks for your help.

As my friend above states, many video encoders/editors allow you to crop a video.

The program can be a basic/free one like avidemux or virtualdub through to a full-blown nle such as Vegas.

Both avidemux and virtualdub work with 'offsets' so you use a selector box to chose which pixels you do not want and the re-encode will then just use the rest.

For a 'beginner' avidemux is probably the easiest since virtualdub requires plugins to work with non-avi video and an additional null-transform filter before you can start cropping.

Yet you are most unlikely to have even a video with greater than 2048*2048 pixels to start with.

Thanks, I will take a look at Avidemux.
