  1. Hi everyone,

I want to record/capture programs through HDMI. The signal is protected by HDCP.

    I have read both threads:
How to record TV show to PC using HAUPPAUGE HD-PVR DEVICE?

    and

    HDCP strippers

I want to use the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 + the HDMI Stripper from TomTop. But, I am new to this.

    Objective:
The tv box sends programs through an HDMI cable to the TV. I want to record and capture thos programs.

    My worry is:
    - can you confirm the HMDI stripper solution is still valid?
=> one person posted it didn't work. Not sure it would apply to me. see https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/334145-HDCP-strippers?p=2239413&viewfull=1#post2239413
    - could someone explain to me briefly how to connect my tv, the hd box from the tv provider, my hauppage hd pvr 2 and the hdmi splitter please?
    - what is the correct process to make it work?

    Thank you for you help.

Below my signature, you will find a summary of what was said in the threads mentionned above.

"Since all outputs are the same format you need to make sure that the device with the lowest resolution, frame rate capability, and color depth capability, auto negotiates first. So if you have a device that can only handle up to 1080i30 and another device that can handle up to 1080p60 the 1080i30 device must perform the auto negotiation. Or you can force the source device to output 1080i30. Also try specifying YPbPr or RGB.

I don't know if there is a preference for which output port auto negotiates. I would try switching the outputs around to see if that helps. Ie, if output 1 to TV and output 2 to capture device doesn't work try swapping the cables so that output 1 goes to the capture device and output 2 goes to the TV."

That person's problem probably had nothing to do with HDMI/HDCP. The Intensity Shuttle is just very picky about systems it will run in.

  3. Hi Jagabo,

    Thank you for the comment.

Do you know how to use the switch? like any IT hub/switch?

TV box > HDMI Splitter > Hauppauge HD PVR 2 > PC
    Would this sound correct?

More details on how to set it up and the corect use would interest me.

    What about the Chinese product?

Any help would be most welcome.

    Thanks.

Just plug in the cables, turn on the splitter, and use the recording software that comes with the HD PVR 2.

  5. Would you be able to confirm that this Chinese splitter works? Have you tested it yourself?
    Quote Quote
  6. I don't know much about the Chinese device (TomTop?). The only device I have tested personally was the CVID BG-550 1x4 splitter that I got from Amazon (I believe the reports that the 1x2 splitter from the same vendor works too):

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0089DVCT8/

It worked with the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 and an ElGato GameCapture HD. The HDCP protected sources I tried were an LG Blu-ray player, an upscaling DVD player, and an HTPC (with Windows Media Center an a Cablecard tuner -- which require HDMI+HDCP). It worked on all of them.

By the way, the BG-550 I got did not have the CVID logo on it, just the "HDMI 3D Splitter 1x4" text as pictured in this post:

    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/334145-HDCP-strippers?p=2239012&viewfull=1#post2239012

There appear to be several vendors importing that device, silk screening their own name on it, and reselling it.

  8. Thx for the tip.

    I am in the UK.

This looks the same sold directly from a UK reseller:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-WAY-HD-hub-1080p-1-x-4-HDMI-3D-Splitter-Amplifier-HDTV-1-3...170917&afsrc=1

    Details (product code):
    HDTV 1.3(Black)(DG-OT4604)

Does it look like the same product? You should have a product code (model number) somewhere on your box.

  14. I have more to ask...

What is the correct process please?

    1. connect the tv only for the initial negotiation
    2. and then connect the hdmi for hauppauge
    3. start recording

    OR

    1. I can start with both (splitter + tv) connected at the same
    2. turn on the tv first
    3. start recording

any specific slot to use for the tv?
any specific slot to use for the splitter?

Thank you for you time and help.

    My setup:

    PS3 ===> INPUT
    TV ===> OUTPUT 1
    PC ===> OUTPUT 2

    Turn ON order:

    1º - PS3
    2º - TV
    3º - PC

  16. Nice.
I might get the HDMI splitter first to be sure I have the version as one the pics, before investing in a capture card/bix (Hauppauge HD PVR2).

Any idea if it is possible to initiate the TV turned on and then off the tv to finish the recording?

I mean, would the procedure work?
    1. turn on the HDMI splitter
    2. turn on the tv box
    3. turn on the PC and the capture card
    4. start recording
    5. turn off the TV after a few minutes...
    6. would the capture process and the signal continue to work?

This would allow to archive and using the minimum amount of energy possible. Saving energy is the idea behind this procedure.

I have been using the TopTop splitter successfully with the PVR-2. I connect the cable box HDMI output to the splitter input and connect my TV to output #1. I connect output #2 to the Hauppauge unit. I leave the splitter powered up and only power up the PVR-2 when I use it. When I power up the PVR-2, the TV goes blank for several seconds when I connect the computer and the PVR-2 driver gets loaded and configured.

I haven't tried turning the TV off after starting recording. I think it may cause problems if you turn it on again because the splitter will negotiate a handshake with the TV again. Probably depends on the model TV that is used.

Edit: I tried turning off the TV, then back on again. There didn't seem to be any problem with the video capture. Maybe the HDMI inputs are active on Panasonic VT-50s.

Yes. Turn off TV after start record only disable TV, not affect capture card.

My stb or tv must be sensitive. If I connect one of the 1x4 splitter outputs to the PVR2 and the other to the tv, then start a capture there is a short 1-3 second glitch in the video at the point where I turn off the tv. I can even see the lights on the PVR2 re-engaging. Maybe this wouldn't happen with a game console input source but I can't confirm that at this time. There is no interruption if I don't connect another output to the splitter except the one going to the PVR2 and use the output from the PVR2 hdmi bypass to view on the tv. That works perfectly for me.

    @johntheripper
I can also confirm I got mine in the same outer cardboard box pic as posted above by 2 users for both the 1x4 splitters I bought from TomTop and ACE (Amazon.ca) as you quoted in the 1st post.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.
