Using a BlackMagic Intensity Pro (which is the cheaper Blackmagic card), that works if the output of the BDP is reduced to 1080i as the Pro can't capture the 1080p that many output by default. To capture 1080p, you need a Blackmagic Decklink card - there's one that does 3D as well, but it costs 5x more than the Pro. The splitter does indeed pass on 1080p but haven't tried it with 3D frame sequential.
My main use for this will be to archive HD stuff off of my PVR boxes. There are easier ways of ripping Blu-ray disks using PC software (Slysoft springs to mind) should anybody want to do that (for personal media library use of course!).

Received the 1x4 3D Splitter and works!
Needs to have a monitor connected. Out 1 HDMI to monitor/Tv and Out 4 to HDMI in on Blackmagic Decklink Studio.
Some power on and power off and everything works!
Using the provided Blackmagic Media Express software.
This is a HD 1080i 50 from a cable box that have HDCP, without the splitter no signal.
For record i will use it in other PC with the new DeckLink Mini Recorder (145$ and only HDMI and HD-SDI in) is cheaper that Intensity and records 1080p and 8 Channels embedded audio. Soon!
Update: After the initial setup i have disconnected the TV from out1 and the out4 keeps working even if i reboot the PC, the Cable Box and the Splitter.Last edited by jmggs; 9th Apr 2013 at 07:13.

Just a side note about the BlackMagic capture cards and audio over HDMI.
The popular Intensity Pro card can capture 2 channels of stereo PCM audio from HDMI.
The shuttles and the more expensive decklink cards can capture up to 8 channels of PCM audio from HDMI but CANNOT decode lossy bitstreams such as Dolby Digital and DTS5.1. Most STBs will not send multi-channel PCM audio over HDMI for the BlackMagic devices to capture - UK Sky+HD boxes only ever send stereo and rely on separate optical/coax output for DD - other boxes I've played with can generally send bitstream over HDMI. Most good Blu-ray players will send multi-channel PCM. I have a panasonic Blu-ray recorder with built-in UK Terrestrial HD tuner. It can take the broadcast audio stream (which for UK Terrestrial HD broadcasts is HE-AAC) and convert it on the fly to multichannel PCM if the program being broadcast is surround encoded. I assume their satellite recorders do something similar with DD. If you feed bitstream audio over HDMI into a BlackMagic capture device, you'll either get no sound or distorted white noise depending on the encoding used.
I've currently got a SkyDigital CaptureX card on order from Amazon which I'm going to evaluate for purpose of capturing 1080i50 with DD5.1 bitstream over HDMI. Anybody got one of these?

I'm looking for a good HDMI capture card/device costing between 150 - 300 hundred dollars. Being able to capture 1080i & 7.1 audio would be fantastic. I think an external capture device might work best for my circumstances. Here is what I'm thinking.
DirecTV receiver > CVID BG-550 Mini portable 4 Port HDMI one leg to Onkyo HT-R591 > Samsung LN46B540P8F XZA 46" and another leg to the capture device > Windows 2008 R2 running on a ASRock X79 Extreme 11 motherboard with 32Gig ram and 3-2Tb hard drives.
If running the capture device to Windows 2008 R2 is too much of a problem I could make the base OS Linux or Windows 7 or 8 and virtualize the OSs I will be running on it, but keeping it the way it is would be easier.
All suggestions and comments appreciated.

7.1 audio is going to limit your choices significantly, and is silly if your source is DirecTV which doesn't support 7.1 or lossless. It would make much more sense to buy a card that will capture the compressed AC3 stream rather than decompressed PCM.
I would wait to see what a previous poster thinks of their SkyDigital CaptureX card before proceeding.
I have no idea what driver support is like for Win2k8.

hi i need some help and advice for recording gameplay from my PS3
actually i use the driver trick with my avermedia TV card and record the videos in 720p@60fps with the VH capture software.
I used to record video+audio uncompressed because my pc (or the software/codec) wasn’t able to compress it on the fly…
pc specs:
I7-920@3,80ghz
24gb RAM
HD4870 1GB
2x160GB Raid0 (C: )
2x2TB (D: and E: )
compressed videos looked like crap and didn't perfom well! cpu usage didn't go up very high while capturing (~20%)
lately my pc is a little bit slow and 60fps couldn’t be recorded without a few lags so I reduced the fps captured to 30 (it really doesn’t matter within a video)
maybe I should reinstall windows (was installed feb.2010)
so far so good…
now I would prefer to record in 1080p (60fps would be best)
but what too I need and how should I set up?
should I use an internal card (can my PC handle this?) or something external (don’t have USB3.0)?
and which software would be best to record 1080p videos?
for the compression… Is h.264 the codec to go for or is there a better solution?
how can I strip the HDCP of the signal?
as I read Stripping the HDCP should work with a splitter like
http://www.ebay.com/itm/220864833576
is this the right one? I would need a reseller which ships to Austria
or should I use something like
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HDMI-Output-Input-Blu-ray-HD-Video-Capture-Card-grabber-Conver...item3a7e9ec8ad
but there it says „Note:Do not support 1080P 50/60hz” so I don’t think I can capture the PS3 signal with this card as the PS3 outputs in 1080p@60Hz
or should i use the above mentioned splitter with something like
http://www.amazon.de/Elgato-Game-Capture-Definition-Rekorder/dp/B0082J1YCE/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
with the stripped off HDCP it should be possible to use the HDMI input...
i would really appreciate if somebody could help me!Last edited by Flail; 18th Apr 2013 at 04:46.

The Elgato Game Capture HD accepts (and passes through) a 1080p60/50 signal but it records at 1080p30/25 -- it discards every other frame. As far as I know there are no consumer grade capture devices that record at 1080p60/50. The splitter you linked to looks like the the one that removes HDCP.

So I've been looking around and found these external capture cards. Does anyone know any pros and cons about these cards?

Beware of the Shuttle for USB 3.0. It is very picky as to which USB 3.0 chipset you connect it to. There are plenty of cases where people have bought this unit and failed to get it to work. I decided against the USB 3.0 shuttle and switched motherboards to one that had Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt shuttle has been faultless with an ASUS P8Z77-V Pro/Thunderbolt board and 3rd gen core i3-3220 CPU.
I've now received my SkyDigital captureX card and have had it capturing 1080i50 from a PVR box. Still fiddling with the audio - can't yet confirm if it will capture DD properly over HDMI. It has an optical input and using this direct from the PVR seems to work OK without lipsync issues (as the picture data is going a longer route via the Chinese splitter). The CaptureX came with MainConcept codec and it's easy to switch video and audio encoding. Happy with it so far.

Hey, I received the HDMI 1x4 Splitter from Tomtop. I put it between my Comcast Cable Box and the Intensity Pro HDMI in port, ran Intensity Pro HDMI out to an HDMI in port on the Flat Screen. Nothing but a blue screen.
If I plug my Laptop's HDMI out port to the 1x4 Splitter HDMI in port, it works fine on the TV and in Black Magic Media Express.
I am really bummed out.
Can you offer suggestions?

Make sure the cable box is putting out a resolution the Intensity pro supports: 720p60 or 1080i30. Not 1080p60.
Also, as a test run HDMI from cable box to splitter, HDMI from splitter to TV. Make sure that works. Actually, I'd make that the standard TV configuration. Then use a second output on the splitter to run to the Intensity Pro.Last edited by jagabo; 20th Apr 2013 at 21:02.

What happens if you try to open the device in VirtualDub's capture mode? I can't imagine it would accept the compressed audio input. I'm also wondering if you can test it with Ut Video Codec in the accompanying software.
-
Running VirtualDub with CaptureX and 1080i50 input, video captured OK but so far no audio. Every time I start VirtualDub, it wants to display output size as 720x576 and I keep having to set it to 1920x1080.
Couldn't get the SkyDigital software to capture using the Ut Video Codec. Gives errors on starting the capture.

OK, I got into the Cable Box settings and disabled all but 720p60. The splitter still sends the signal OK and the TV briefly displays 720p 60. I still get nothing out of the Intensity Pro. The Capture windows stays black, with or without the Intensity Pro HDMI out ported to the TV.
I know the Intensity Pro is working because I can output HDMI from my Laptop into the Intensity Pro HDMI in port, then the Intensity Pro HDMI out to the TV. The Capture window and TV display my Laptop desktop. This works with and without the Splitter in-line. Go figure.

Are you able to play some HDCP-protected content through your laptop to test? Meaning an encrypted Blu-ray Disc in PowerDVD, Arcsoft, etc.
Huffyuv maybe? Could you take a screencap of the container and codec selection options in their software?

I ordered the splitter from TomTop with another item at the end of March. I finally had to email them for the tracking # I paid for since all they said in their email of April 14 was the order was processed. When I checked there was only 1 item and it wasn't the splitter. So according to the tracking info they only processed the order 12-13 days later, didn't send the confirming email or update the tracking info until a few more days after that, did not provide the tracking number in the original confirming email and then shipped only the second item which is still in China as of today (but they took the money for the whole order). What a pain! As soon as I realized they only sent part of the order, I complained and they emailed to say the splitter was out of stock and would ship later. When I emailed them back they said the splitter was now back in stock and asked if I wanted it sent now or with a future order. I said send it now and give me another tracking number but don't expect me to pay again!
After all this my concern is that when I look at the current pictures on their site (item code C1173) it is not the same as the original previously advertised one which others ordered and received. This one does not say 3D in the name like it did in March, the wording placement is different and the on/off switch on the front is a rocker instead of a push button. I hope it's not a different manufacturers similar priced 1 to 4 splitter like I could get locally with a lot less hassle. I specifically ordered this model since it has been confirmed to work by many users. I checked the TomTop site often and never once did I see this item shown as being out of stock. Now I'll have to wait another month or more to find out if this thing works or if I'll face more bs, wasted time and money. There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

PayPal still protects the order but the delays are so long who knows what they'll say if this goes on for 2 months or more. The eBay order still comes from China so it wouldn't help if the product has changed internally and doesn't work the same way. To PayPal and eBay TomTop uses the same description so I don't know if they would see it as substantially different than advertised. I'm sure they don't care about some hdcp trick. Besides you're adding an extra layer and the cost is similar when you add their site coupon discounts. There were some complaints on the Tomtop forum about problems with orders and TomTop told the people to deal with Ebay and Ebay told them to deal with TomTop. I don't know the exact issues I wasn't looking for that but it's just what I saw on their forum.
My main concern is that they ship this doggone thing so I can see if it works. I hate the horse and pony game. Unknown to me the 2nd part of the order is sitting there in a pending state. Do they email me telling me about it? No they wait for me to ask about the missing item. They wait until I ask and then they write back..."Do you want us to ship it with your next order?" No you dork that's why I ordered it in the 1st place. Don't hold it back and mark it as pending while you have my money and wait until I contact you before you do something! I may never order from you again. As a new customer they should bend over backwards to have it catch up to the 1st parcel which hasn't even left the country yet. Dumb dumb dumb!!!!
I would have ordered the other model from the States labelled CVID at a bit higher overall net cost but unless they use the USPS through to Canada Post it can be a real costly dealing with border brokers through UPS or others who add unnecessary exorbitant customs brokers fees. There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

I had thought there were some U.S. resellers of this unit who had it in stock, albeit with their extra margin for profit added on ? Your experience -- and the associated uncertainties -- turn me back in the direction of the HD Fury or Moone devices, more known quantities even though they cost much more. But that's just me . . . . .
I've had better Customs luck regarding the shipments I got from Canada. Some of those items were used though; others were marked "used" by the seller on the customs form, even though this was bending the truth at best. But then there was the new-in-box, leftover stock DVDR (a couple years back) that came through, without getting assessed by customs or having other non-shipping fees.
Do let us know how this turns out. When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

I can't wait to get it to see if they did something to the hdcp handshake or if the changes are only cosmetic. I'll definitely post the results when I get it.
A question to anyone who owns the splitter.
Do you all have the original model with the round on/off push button switch or does anyone own the model with the rocker switch? There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.
