  1. Hi all, I have encountered a problem as follow,

I have recorded a video by using a webcam recorder and save it as an avi.file.
However, I can't open it. I have tried different kinds of software, such as media player classic etc, it doesn't work as well.

I get the following message when I open it with GOM Player:

The following is the binary information of the file failed to play.

It looks like it doesn't contain anything at all.

Try open it with mediainfo and see what it says.

Try also play with VLC Media Player.

  5. VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod will try to repair AVI files if need be when you open them, although I think yours is beyond that. If successful though, you can resave it as a fresh AVI using DirectStreamCopy as the video compression method (no re-encoding). It can't hurt to try.

Thanks for answering. I have tried to use VirtualDub to repair the file, however when I tried to open the file in VirtualDub, a dialog box poped up with message: The file "E:\2013-1-27 02.07.16. AVI" is of an unknown or unsupported file type" ;(

Besides, for VirtualDubMod, it also fails to recover my file. A dialog box with message "Cannot detect file type of "E:\2013-1-27 02.07.16.AVI" is poped up when I tried to open the file. ;(

    What should I do ? ...

    Anyway, thanks for your reply.

It's probably empty as aedipuss says because it's only zeros in the gom player header preview.

You could also open the avi with a hex editor to check the entire file, like http://download.cnet.com/HxD-Hex-Editor/3000-2352_4-10891068.html .If it's only zeros/dots in the hex editor it's empty.

    Baldrick, thanks for you reply!

I have checked the file with hex editor. The file is not only zeros/dots. The first 1500 row is zeros and dots, while the rest are not. So is it possible for me to cut the first 1500 row's zeros/dots ? so that I can recover my video ?

    Thanks very much
