    Hi

When I do standard def transcodes for my CRT - I use color range of 16-235

If I want to do standard def transcodes for a high-def TV should I use the same color range?

Does it matter whether it is LCD or Plasma?

    TIA

16 black and 235 (nominal white) is standard for most video
    DV/DVD/ASTC/DVB/H.264/HDV/AVCHD/Blu-Ray/etc.

The levels 236-255 are reserved for transient overshoots. Consumer camcorders often use these levels so will appear over white unless adjusted down to 235.

  3. Note that high def digital video usually uses rec.709 rather than rec.601 color. The luma channels have the same range (16-235) but the colors are handled differently.

    Thanks edDV and jagabo

I do own an HD 24" Monitor but not an HD TV as yet
Do most/any HD TV's have a "color range" setting - in which case a video with PC.601 range can be displayed as rec.601 or vice-versa?

An HDTV set will usually assume an SD source is BT.601 and an HD source is BT.709. This is mainly an issue for encoding media not watching. The differences are small so will only be noticed by HD geeks.
