High def onto a DVD?

My computer-illiterate father has a fairly decent PC with a 720p monitor. Occasionally, I'll have some 720p videos that he'd like to watch. Using ConvertX2DVD, I'm able to take a few of these videos and make a DVD for him. He puts it in the drive, and VLC Media Player pops up and plays it for him. But of course the conversion process reduces the quality to SD.

This is all very convenient, but I'm starting with 720p videos and he's got a system capable of showing them, it would be nice if there was some way to do this.

Is there any way to somehow put high def onto a DVD with a menu that might spawn a video player when the disc is inserted?

Make an AVCHD/Blu-ray with a menu with for example multiavchd, tmpgenc authoring works, etc. But you must play with a blu-ray software player that support menus like tmt, powerdvd or windvd. No free blu-ray player supports menus.

Menus make this difficult as explained. If you simply encode a series of 1280x720p files, he can play these from a DVDR data disc with an appropriate player like PowerDVD, MPCHC or VLC. But these won't play in a DVD player.

You could make simple menus in html with links to the files on the DVDR.

They definitely don't need to play in a standalone DVD player.

When you say "encode a series of [...] files", do you mean to simply burn them onto a disc, as though I was just backing them up?
