    Hi all,

My cousin wants to re-purpose her old Macbook 3rd generation laptop as a HTPC. The problem is that the only port I can access on her TV is the side-accessible HDMI port; she won't let anyone remove it from the wall -- not even professionals -- because she's worried it might get damaged.

This means that I need to find her some sort of adapter/box that will let me merge the Macbook's video and audio together into HDMI

The Macbook has a Mini-DVI port. There are adapters available that will convert Mini-DVI to either DVI or HDMI video.

Audio could come from either the headphone jack -- which according to the manual outputs both analog and digital audio -- or a USB audio adapter.

Is there something that would let me merge DVI or HDMI with the audio sources? The only type of cable that I've found that does this takes DisplayPort or mini-DisplayPort, not mini-DVI, not DVI, not HDMI.

Thanks in advance for your help,

    Phil

IMO: Better to use a networked Video player. Cheaper in the long run.

But such devices exist (this one requires S/PDIF and has poor reviews).

This one would be more likely to work but the price far exceeds a networked player.

Any thoughts about the products listed here? (I found it after googling a bit)

I have no first hand experience with any of them.
