It depends on the codecs you use. AVI and WMV are containers. They can contain video compressed with any codec you want (although WMV usually contains video compressed with Microsoft codecs like WMV3).

Size = bitrate x running time. The lower the bitrate, the smaller the file. The question you need to answer for yourself is which codec looks best at the lower bitrate ?

If you are not interested much in quality, just small size, go with WMV. But Xvid can be played on most set top Divx players if you use the proper configuration. WMV doesn't work with many software players outside of WMP and very few stand alone players. Either codec will do low bitrates and small filesizes. But WMV may have the edge on small VS quality. At least between those two choices.

You could make up a short 5 minute representative test file and try it with different encoders and see if the format and quality are what you want.

  11. The difference between Xvid and WMV quality at low bitrates (small files sizes) is mostly a matter of personal taste. Xvid will be a little sharper but will have more macroblocks. WMV9 will be a little fuzzier but have fewer macroblocks. WMV9 in a WMV container will drop the frame rate if the video would otherwise be too badly degraded. This leads to jerky action scenes.
