I managed to use VirtualDub-MPEG2 to convert my VOB file to an avi.

I recompressed the file but it came out in blocks

I used Dvix 5.2.1 codec, Avreage Bitrate is 780 kps,Encode mode is 1-pass
Audio is source mode Direct stream copy
    Video is fast recompress

This is what my settings are at would it be my codec

Depending on the resolution, 780 is pretty low, so I would expect blocking on all actions scenes, and pulsing on areas of low tonal range. You might get better results if you use a 2-pass encode, or sacrifice size for quality by doing a CQ encode.

I remain convinced as I said yesterday to someone else that VirtualDub is a VERY POOR choice to use for encoding to Divx. Don't get me wrong, it's a great program, but nobody I know of who is serious about encoding to Divx uses it for that. The most serious people I know are using Gordian Knot. I prefer Dr. Divx as it's easier to use and set up, but I have used Gordian Knot too. Your bit rate is pretty low. Resize to a lower resolution if you must use this bit rate as the smaller your resolution, the better the output will be. A higher bit rate and 2 pass encoding would be better. Fast recompress may take some shortcuts that hurt quality, but again, I don't use Virtual Dub for encoding so I'm making a guess here.

Virtualdub is just a front-end to the encoders. Unless you are using filters, it does nothing but pass video through. If the quality is crap when encoding Divx you have set it up wrong. Virtualdub uses exactly the same codec as Dr Divx, G-Knot or Auto-GK. It's not the front-end, it's how you configure the codec.

780k is much too low for Divx or Xvid. Not surprising that you don't like the final result.

guns1inger is right - Vdub is just the host.
