i was jsut wondering, since dvd's are 8.5gig and dvd-r's are 4.7 gig, is there a double sided duel layer disk that has 8.5 on each size, i was backing up an er disk and it had like 7gig on each side

Those are called DVD-18's and I'm pretty sure they don't exist in recordable format. Even the commercial ones are generally very rare.

Agreed. Also, even DVD-10 recordables (single-layer, double-sided) are prohibitively expensive; imagine what DVD-18s would cost.

I would think that splitting to 2 DL DVDRs or 4 SL DVDRs might be a much better option here.
    If in doubt, Google it.

As DS/DL commercial discs don't span both sides (each side is considered it's own program and has it's own VMG), you can just backup each side to its own DL disc. No "splitting" needed.

Well, it is splitting in the physical sense - it would take up 2 discs as opposed to just the 1.
    If in doubt, Google it.

True, I just wanted to make sure everybody knew that you wouldn't "shrink" 2 sides the same way you would shrink 1 side, as each side is totally independent.
