  1. This might be a newbie question, but with the DL-DS DVD's, when recording, do you have to stop the recorder half way through the discs capacity and turn the disc over?

  2. These are called DVD-18? Another query, I can't see any listed when I searched in DVD Media. Are they perhaps pro-use only?

    That is in DVDR format.

You can commercially press a double-sided DL disk. Many of them are out there usually with 4:3 aspect ratio on one side and wide letterboxed 16:9 on the other.

Don't know if they make those in burnable DL or SL but all the flippers I've seen like that locally are rental and Public Library lenders in SL format with 4:3 on one side and widescreen on the other. None of my pressed bought DL discs are flippers even when they are multi disc packs nor have I seen burnable flipper DL or SL blanks here in the great white north.

Even if burnable SL or DL flippers would be available, I suspect the burner apps are written in such a way that they expect a complete burn on each side. So it's like burning 2 separate video discs and you look after the authoring. If you wanted one long video across 2 discs then after part1 insert a small end video menu that says something like " End of part1, flip the disc to continue" then on disc 2 you could just have a video with either a simple menu entitled part 2 or no menu and just start the video. In any case you would still be doing 2 separate burns.

The DVD sizes can be a bit confusing. There are basicly 4 different DVD Sizes,

DVD-5, holds around 4 700 000 000 bytes and that is 4.37 computer GB where 1 kbyte is 1024 bytes* . DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW supports this format. Also called Single Sided Single Layered. This is the most common DVD Media, often called 4.7 GB Media.

DVD-10, holds around 9 400 000 000 bytes and that is 8.75 computer GB. DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW supports this format. Also called Double Sided Single Layered.

DVD-9, holds around 8 540 000 000 bytes and that is 7.95 computer GB. DVD+R supports this format. Also called Single Sided Dual Layered. This media is called DVD-R9, DVD-R DL, DVD+R9, DVD+R DL or 8.5 GB Media.

DVD-18, holds around 17 080 000 000 bytes and that is 15.9 computer GB. DVD+R supports this format. Also called Double Sided Dual Layered.
    -----------------------------------------------------

All the Dl disks Iv’e seen are single sided
My units will not write to a DL disk but will play a DVD-DL. I don’t think a DVD –18 will.

I believe that most disks on which both sides are used are single layer double side

If a unit will record to a DL-9 disk, it should not be necessary to turn the disk over although a number of users have reported a glitch when changing layers. I do not know about the DVD-18 . but unless the drive can record/play to BOTH sides (laser top and bottom) it would seem it would have to be turned over

    PS
Has anyone seen a Blank DL-DS DVD-18 disk,
As to the original post I believe (lordsmurf is right) they don;t make DL-DS disks (at least at present.

True. I referred to recordable and/or re-writeable (which do not exist commercially, that I'm aware).

Pressed media can and do come dual-layer double-sided. I had one not long ago. A flipper, with 4:3 on one side, 16:9 on the other. Barb Wire, I believe it was.
