I know dual layer, single sided dvd's (DVD-9) are all over the place, but Ive never seen a dvd-10 (double sided, single layer) for sale, the only time ive seen one is on a couple commercial movies that I've bought.

do they sell these to consumers?? if so, where could I get them...they are kind of useful cuz they hold slightly less than a gig more than the DL (DVD-9) ones, that is, if u dont mind flipping it...which I dont!

    Sure, here:

They're ram discs in a cartridge and kind of pricey.

I haven't used them so I can't comment on the quality.

I've seen these everywhere at the local Computer Fairs in the Northeast, but it's been a while since I've bought media at these shows. They may be more of a novelty now, and may be difficult to find but I'm sure you can find them locally somewhere as an overstock item!

    Good Luck!

don't know who told you they hold more but that's not true, just a misleading name.

DVD-10 means a two-sided DVD disc that hold single data layer on both sides.

Effectively this means that DVD-10 is a dual-sided DVD-5 and can hold 8.75 gigabytes of data with 4.38 gigabytes on each side. Two-sided discs need to be flipped over in order to access the other data side.

He's actually saying that a two sided dvd-10 dvdr holds more data than a single sided Dual Layer dvdr.

ok. then we're talking 8.75 for a flippy and 7.96 for a dl. guess it might work if they don't cost much more than 2 dvdrs. but no one seems to make them any more.

thx. the only reason I asked is becuase I have an older dvd player like around 2001.

according to dvdrw.com and this sites compatibliltiy lists , my model sony dvp-c70d CAN play dvd+r +rw and +rDL, but 'm having some trouble playing them.
playback is fine, but when I ff or rw it stutters and eventually freezes on the picture so the only way to unfreeze it is to power off then on again.

this only happenes when the source file (before converting to dvd using sonic mydvd) has a .tivo extension. I love putting my tivo files straight to dvd w/out having to convert them first and sonic is the only program I know of that does that) and I like putting them on DL becuase you can fit more shows w/out having to compensate qualty.

this doesnt happen when the source file is an avi, b/c I have a couple of those on the same disc as the tivo program and they ff and rw smoothly, also tivo files dont do this on a single layer disc

also I had another expereince a while back where I made each file into a chapter (these were avi's) and it froze during chapter transition..what gives?? (so I didnt even bother doing chapters this time-its just one long one)

do you think it b/c I recorded the program on my tivo at best quality and my old dvd player can process it? if this is true why doesnt it do this on a single layer disc??

I'm just watching the menu screen now of one of the dvd's I made, and I've never seen this before but its all pixely and stuff, plus I've been getting the C 13:00 error a lot, which the manual says means dirty disc, I cleaned the disc, do you think its confusing it w/ dirty lens?? and thats why its acting funky

ive never cleaned the lens before b/c I wasnt sure what to use, do I just use one of those lens cleaning discs w/ the little brushes on it? and this may be a stupid question, but in a 5 disc changer (carousel) are there 5 lenses (one for each disk) so I'd need to put the cleaning disc in each spot or is it just one lens that reads all the discs??

also, I burned at the slowest speed my burner does, which is 4x for single layers and 2.4x for DL's

do all these symptoms add up to one simple diagnosis that I'm just to naieve to pinpoint, or is it more complicated than that?

an can someone confirm my dvd player really play dvd+r DL's? b/c like I said those 2 sites said it can, but I dont see it anywhere in to manual or the specs, or on sonys site. there seems to be a contridiction here.

answers to any or all of these questions would be helpful.
    thx!

I think I figured it out...I studies my DL's a little harder...If I wait long enough and ff over the layer break in the DL disk, THATS when i it freezes, cuz I tested it out and it freezes at the same point every time..some times is does get past it...but it frezzes for over a minute..and then other times, I have to power off and on again to get it to work.. If it froze at totally different times, I wouldnt be thinking this

I think this is why it doesnt happen w/ dual layer dvds, I will do some more obeserving and see it it freezes at the same point on every DL I have made.

do you think this could be it??

It's almost a miracle that a 6 year old DVD player is still working. Congratulations. However, are you the cheapest guy on the planet? Your player is so old that even today's cheapest players are probably better. Yes, old players like yours don't work with DL media well at all. You're lucky that it kind of sort of plays DL discs. If it was me, I would just buy a current player, even a cheap one, which would surely play DL discs correctly and get on with my life instead of trying to beat this old player into doing something it was never designed to do, but if you want to continue to fight this fight, then good luck to you. Yes, these old players have problems with layer breaks on DL media, but again, is it REALLY worth it to just be cheap and put up with this crap than to just buy a current player that works?

DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL media did not exist in 2001 and in fact at this time the DVD manufacturers claimed it was IMPOSSIBLE to ever create such media. There are differences in the lasers and firmware on these old players, and to be blunt, Sony was never the best designed DVD player anyway, with players of your era by Sony being notorious for not working with burnable media very well at all. Since DL media didn't exist when your ancient player was made, no, none of us can confirm that it works with DL media because it was never designed to do so.

Its not me thats the problem...I'd go out and buy one right away...its my dad..you dont know him...he so stuck in the 50's and he thinks just b/c the dvc player plays "dvd's" that it works....

even if I pay for the thing...I still have to spend an hour expalining to him why we need a new one..and I just havent had the paitience to do that...the dvd's player sits in the family room thats why...If I ask him to pay for it..its "no way we dont need a new one, the one we have works fine" and if I spend my money on its "why r u spending ur money on something we dont need"

he doesnt even get the whole DL thing...he asks me to burn over 2 hour basketball games recorded on tivo and doesnt understand the process...and that that wont really fit on a single layer w/out really crappy qulaity...and dont even give me the quality issue, he wouldn't know a quality dvd if it hit him in the face...his opinion of quality and ours...VASTLY different

and for me..its been really frustrating b/c I burn all different types of blank media...and its annoying the hell out of me..these c 13:00 errors and freezing dvd's...I guess ive have to just suck it up to him and try to explain how old a 6 year old dvd player really is.....ur talking to a guy who thinks a computer lasts 10 years...and who doesnt know the original razr phones are not the newest-best phone anymore, they are phasing out, not in.

or of course I could just go buy one, and set it up while hes at work...then of course I'd have to get someone to take me to the store to get it (I should have a license by now, but I dont) and I dont want to deal w/ my mom either..shes not as bad but shes still bad...the only one who wouldnt question me when I ask to go to the store would be my brother!

so thats the story of why I have put off getting a new dvd player---believe me, I would have gotten one years ago! I've known this things been outdated for a long time...I was just confused b/c the compatibility lists on this site and a couple others say that it can play DL, and I knew DL didnt exist at the time that I bought it...but I was confused by the documentation!

I guess I cound order it online. I do have a credit card

    1) what brand should I go w/?

    2) I want an affordable player, that plays all the formats,

    3) If possible I want a disc changer, preferably less than 120 dollars (I'm kind low on cash, so I want the best i can get for cheap money!)

    4) can anyone point me to a site (doesnt have to be a big commercial site like bestbuy or circuit, sometime the smaller sites, to midsize, tiger direct, etc. have the best deals) that has sales/good deals??

ok I couldnt wait...I bought it..not at tigerdirect but at walmart.com for 84.00 (including shipping) its just what I want-multiformat compatible, 5 disc changer, really good price (the divx thing is a bonus, I was not looking for that)

plus it gets pretty damn good reviewed....everybody says..you get a lot for the price and its worth the money?

any one else have any positive/negative input on the RCA DRC-290???

its about time I surrender that old junky sony!..it was good at one time (paid like $350 (on sale) in 2001!) but now it sucks!
