can someone tell me what h.264 is and if there's any way i can import this into either Vegas 8 or 9?

i have these mkv packages from an anime season i downloaded, and i want to import the videos to edit in Vegas (these videos are of the best quality i've been able to find), but it won't recognize the format...

    any ideas?

Vegas 8 includes a Cineform codec. Vegas 9 ? You menat the consumer program?

This is the solution you want but cost is $129.

Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

i figured it was encoded in avc1...which really doesn't tell my anything at all

    does it make any difference?

is that really my only solution?

Highly compressed video formats like H.264 and XviD/Divx are poor candidates for editing. They are really meant for the end product, not something to edit or work with. For just simple cut and pastes, not so bad. But transitions or other effects may be problematic.

I usually convert to a lossless or near lossless format like HuffyUV or Lagarith for that type of editing, then re-encode to a high compression final format. This takes time and disc space, but would be much easier for editing. Just my method.

  5. vegas pro 8 imports h264 avc .mp4 without any problem. not that i'd use it as anything but a final output format.

    [edit]
that means you might have to get it out of the mkv container before trying to import...

for those of you who question the format - it's simply the highest possible quality i could get for the source material i'm trying to import, which are downloaded episodes of an anime

i did try to exstract the video from the container, but i only got an error message when i tried to import the h264 into Vegas, saying the format was not supported or the file corrupt

well, it played back just fine in WMP and VCL, so it was definitely not currupt

anyway, i'm converting the mkvs to mp4s with SUPER...works like a charm and keeps the quality too...besides, i'm only gonna use it for cut / paste operations, so i'll be fine

You could simply repackage them using Xvid4PSP. Take a minute or so each clip, without re-encoding.

You do understand that even cut and paste operations will mean re-encoding ?

well...would there be any point in that if Vegas rejected the h264 file inside the container in the first place? cuz i did extract the content with some other application, which i can't remember the name of atm

it would have to be re-encoded anyway, as i'm planing to mix several clips from different videos and render a final video of that...my cut / paste comment was just in reply to redwuz' comment...but yeah - i know there's a loss tho

When you re-encode to mp4, what video codec are you using in Super ?
