Converting .avi (Xvid) to .mp4 or .mkv (H.264 or x.264) w/ subs

Hello I have an .avi file encoded using xvid codec (230mb) and I added an .ass subtitle and I need to convert this video w/ subs to .mp4/.mkv container using h.264/x.264 codec to have a smaller filesize but same quality. I was wondering how to convert a video file .avi (xvid) to .mp4 or .mkv container using h.264/x.264 codec... What programs should I use? Do you have any tutorial on how to do this?

what do you mean added?
almost sounds like you've hardcoded the subs already. almost.
do you want to?

Anyway, you can't use ass subs with mp4.
If you want mp4, convert to srt and mux subs with mp4box(yamb).

If you want to keep the ass subs, you are going to have to go to mkv.
Encode with whatever and use mkvmerge of mkvtoolnix to mux.

The actual encoding can be done with many tools.
The easiest is probably Super to x264/mp4,
then mux that with your ass subs into an mkv.

You could also use megui, automkv, vfw x264...
(be sure to check program requirements)
If you have srt subs you can just load them into automkv.
Megui has muxer tools (the same one mentioned but they're in the pack).

You haven't said much about the source or your target size goals.
I suppose you are looking to encode to h264 with 'constant quality".

All simple tools. Try them, search for a specific guide once you settle on one.
Ask for help if you get stuck.

i was targeting to have a 100+mb video file size? is that possible? how do you set the desired file size to the tools you mentioned?

Use automkv,
where you see disk settings set to '1 cd', pulldown to 'custom size'
and type in your target size.

With the others you need to set the bitrate,
use a bitrate calculator to determine bitrate.
With Super, single pass encode, don't expect to achieve exact target size.
