quick question, i have a 47" Sony Rear Projection HDTV with a DVI input. is it worth it to buy use an HDMI to DVI adapter and purchase a new HDMI DVD player, or, alreay in use is the HDMI out on my Digital/HD Cable box to the DVI input on the TV. Is the picture quality on the DVD that much improved with the "UPCONVERSION" or should i stay with the component inputs from the DVD player???
Thanks---DL

i have the same circumstance...dvi input on hdtv but not hdmi. when i first bought the tv
i had the comcast/motorola hd dvr cable box hooked up with a regular dvi cable and
worked awesome...then 6months later comcast encrypted channels with 5c (HCMI i think) and
my tv would not receive a signal..just blue screen and audio BECAUSE the TV lacked decryption
through an HDMI port. Spent all that money for a digital signal and now have to use component
cable instead. however, since it's only a 34in widescreen, the component video looks every
bit as good as the digital did...with the one noticeable exception of a little darker on background
dark areas (like hd widescreen baseball shot of stadium the far away bleachers not as bright).
if your set is 50in or less, component will probably look damn near as good if you're at least
10-12ft from the set.
let me know what you figure out..curious.
thanks, mike -
i am actually more curious as to the UPCONVERSION from a DVD player with HDMI.......i have my COMCSAST Digi box currently hooked up the way you describe and notice a little better pic than component.
i just want to know if it is worth the money on a new DVD player for the UPCONVERSION.....
PS--i am using a SONY 47" widescreen rear projection HDTV w/DVI.... -
I have a 50" Sony HD RPTV with HDMI connection. Also an LGDVB418 upconverting dvd player with HDMI and an OPPO upconverting dvd player with DVI. Yes, there is a noticeable difference in picture quality, it's not a huge difference, but it is noticeable. If you spent all that money for a large HDTV, you might as well have the equipment to take advantage of it. I bought a cheap, manual switcher from marketeck: http://www.markertek.com/p/fullpage.php?page=037 to switch between my HD cable box and the dvd player. Works fine, go for it.
I love children, girl children... about 16-40
