Mpeg-2 and Vob question

Hi, I am setting up avi files to make into a dvd on ulead dvd workshop, i usually use MpegVideoWizard to convert them to mpeg-2, and then set the files up in ulead dvd workshop and they author sooooooooooooooo fast cause the program dosent have to convert the file i loved it, then i tried avi2dvd(givesgreat quality) and converted them to vob files then i just rename the vob file extension to MPG, and set them up in ulead as usual and the program does the whole coverting thing takes forever! why???? i read somewhere that vob files can be renamed to mpg and still read fine cause they are basically the same thing...............so why is the program coverting the files ????

also what is a quick way to convert avi to mpg 2 fast??
