I have hit a snag I don't know how to fix it. I managed to rip all my DVD's just fine the only issue was that they are all VOB files. So I set about trying to convert them into a small and accessble form and all I could do/find that would work was VOB2MPG which worked great but the file are still way to big.

I have tried looking for something that takes the mpg to avi but I have tried AlltoAVI, AVS4YOU and neither work and I am not sure what else to try.

    I would appreciate any help.

I am not sure what are you trying to do, but must DVD are dual layer so ripped file will be too large for single layer (4.7GB).
You have to compress the file first to fit, do not convert to other formats it is useless, unless you want to make DivX file.
Just look in "Tools" section, on left side of this page, for software.
    One of them is ConvertX2DVD.
Before compression it is a good idea to remove all unnecessary parts from the DVD.
Other good one for this is DVDRebuilder.

sorry maybe I should have stated it that I am not looking to fit on dvd or burn dvd, I ripped all my dvd onto my HD, for easy watching, but the individual files, of say like eps of tv shows are over 1gb a piece, I want to get them smaller. I don't want to compress the mpg cause I don't think that would make for a good quality.

  4. Give autogk a try; it is easy to use and there are many illustrated guides

You cannot make them smaller without re encoding.
    You have two choices.
    1) compress with lower bit rate = loss of quality
    2) convert to DivX (mpeg4) = small file, same quality

ok, but if they are in VOB format why can't I just take that and encode it into an avi? I mean I haven't found a software that will do that, is it possible?

  7. Do you only have VOB's (i.e. not IFO, BUP...regular DVD structure)?

If so, you can use vdubmod or avidemux to encode to a XviD .avi. (There are many more software choices, these are just 2 examples)

If your VOB is interlaced, you may want to use a deinterlacing filter.

That is what he wants to do. You are not listening very vell. He does not want to burn to DVD, he wants to convert them to a smaller AVI file (DivX, XviD). If he wanted to back them up to DVD then he would want to use DVDshrink.

I haven't found a software that will do that, is it possible?
AutoGK is probably the easiest, especially since you've already ripped the VOBs. I would've ripped each DVD as a single VOB and used Virtualdub or Avidemux.

thanks for all the suggestions. I know I probably should have done a better job of ripping the dvds but I am not sure you can have a single VOB file for episodic DVD's, tv shows.

Anyway the AGK program seems to be working, if somewhat slow, looks like I might be doing this for a few days/weeks.

What is slow ? I can do a 2 -pass in better than real time on my quad core. Yours seems to be spec'd pretty much the same as mine, although with less HDDs. I always encode from one drive to another, never from a single drive back to itself.

Quality takes time. There are faster encoders out there. Few, if any, produce the same quality as AutoGK.
