How do I join two VBR avi files?

I have tried using virtual dub and virtualdubmod and they both say that I have to extract the audio and encode to CBR.

If I do that then I will be reducing the audio quality. I want to avoid this if possible.

It shouldn't reduce the audio quality that much, but the audio files may get a little bigger. Just use a high enough bitrate.

Is there any other way to tackle the situation?

Would you recommend just putting them both into nerovision seperatley as VBR's and hoping that there are no sync issues?

I can almost guarantee you there will be. Most apps do not like VBR MP3 audio. If you try to join them you will almost certainly get sync issues. If you just want a big AVI file, you should change them. If you run them through Nero vision it will re-encode them anyway, so you should do it on your terms, not Nero's.

VBR audio is a problem for most (all?) encoders.
You should avoid it at all costs.
That said, there's a special VDub build that's supposed to handle VBR audio - VirtualDub MP3 Freeze - try that.
