Is this due to faulty media or faulty drive?
I can't seem to determine from my search on previous posts.

I've gotten that error before, and it was cleared up by installing the latest burning patches and/or burner firmware (check if there are patches for your software)

I had that error last year at work. My burner just didn't like that batch of media I was using (Verbatims) - yet other burners in the office had no problems with them, so I thought it was the burner at first. But when I tried other brands they worked perfectly. I have been using different dics since and have never gotten the error.
I was able to burn some of those bad discs by dropping the burn speed really low.

Can be either media or the burner. The media is easier to adjust.
For the burner, a dirty lens, failing laser or possibly the firmware, though I doubt that unless you changed something there and then it started. Most common for me were the first two.
If it is the burner, the problem will persist no matter what media and will generally get worse with time. If all else fails after a media change, try cleaning the laser and see it that helps. -
Thanx for the info!
I didn't want to prejudice the jury yet!
I've had the burner Pioneer105 for about 3 years. I bet I've burned about 2000 CDs/DVDs with this thing. I've always used RitekG04s for the DVDs without any problems.
I usually use RecordNow for the DVD burning, but started getting some rejection errors for the first time with this batch of DVDs. I switched to Nero and got 2 Calibration errors. I switched to a lower speed and the last 2 discs burned fine. So I'm thinking the media.
I plan on getting an A09XL in 2 weeks, but didn't want my burner to crap out before then! -
I got it once,it was the media.
Most of the time its the media, it means your writer can't caliberate the speed of the media.
Can be a dirty lens. Can be a lot of things. You might have got better answers if your first message gave your system specs. -
ive started getting these errors too, i have a Pioneer dvr-107d and using discs with CMC Mag2 media code. They have worked flawlessly before, also my drive has started rejecting other discs. It isnt all discs of one batch, just randomly maybe 3-4 out of 10. Going down speed seem to work, but cant say, as the disc burnt in 4x might just aswell have worked in 8x.
Will try other media, but can it be the writer dying? it is not a year old yet. -
Everytime I have gotten this on all of my Pioneer drives wihout fail it has gone away when I changed media. Ritek used ot be good quality media but the last batch of Ritek's I bought was crap and now I use nothing but Taiyo Yuden. As for the CMC media code I was always told that was a taiwanese media code and to stay away from it but who knows that is juts my experience.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question! -
its funny becasue i got this error on 3 sh*t type dvd's i got a wack stack of 50 so i don't mind burning through them, i just rebooted then used another disc from the spindle and it worked fine, all 3 times i could hear the drive trying to spin up to speed but seemed like it was not able to, until i rebooted, all seems ok since i have done 4-5 burns fine
