  1. I would like to know what is the fastest burn speed which I can safely burn backups of my movie DVDs. Will using faster burn speeds affect the read/play reliability of the backup DVD Movie?

I am using the Plextor 708A Burner with Tayio Yuden DVD-R, buring at 4X (with Nero.) I'd like to replace this DVD writer to take advantage of faster burn speeds (8X or higher), using TY DVD-R media.

Can you offer any suggestions as to which drives and media combination will burn DVD movies at speeds 8x or higher, without compromising write/read/play reliability?

    Thank you

  2. The 708A will do 8x. With a faster burner, you could achieve 16x burns with TYG02 reliably. 12x with a couple other medias, but 8x is the safest bet for most medias. Plus, you'll usually need a hacked firmware to write faster than the disc manufacturers rated speed.

Are you saying that the Plextor 708A burns at 8X speed with DVD-R media?

Nero shows 4x as the fastest burn speed using TY DVD-R with my Plextor.

I have burned DVD+R media at 8X with the Plextor, but I want to stick with DVD-R.

Burn speeds shouldnt affect quality. Assuming of course your pc is fast enough or you aren't surfing, playing mp3's and running emule all at the same time.

  6. Your Plextor comes with a nice tool to test this; in Plextools use the PI/POF test to compare burns at different speed.

All I can say is that my 712 really likes burning 4x -R Maxells, I get less than 50kB on the PI, 0 POF and there's hardly any blue on the graph.

Plextools can only do PI/PO scans with the 712A & 716A drives......it can not be done with the 708A drive......for the 708A drive Plextools is good for BITSETTING to DVD-ROM......

    there is no patched firmware to make the 708A drive burn DVD-R @8x speed......you want a faster 8x DVD-R burner then purchase a plextor 712 or a 716, or a pioneer 108 or a benq 1620..........
