  1. I have a PAL format video with a resolution of 480x576 (16:9). I want it to be in a 4:3 mode because I don't have a widescreen tv. I'm using Machine15's guide to convert the pal to ntsc format. What settings do I use to get the movie to look right on my tv screen? I did it with the defaults but I did choose, full screen keep aspect ratio. On the TV, where the credits are rolling at the start of the movie, the names get cut off a little bit on the sides and sometimes a little on the bottom. What are the exact settings I need to use here? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Also, when I use AVICodec to determine the specs of the pal video it says 480x576 (16:9), and the converted file I have in NTSC says 480x480 (16:9). I thought 16:9 was widescreen, but it appears as full screen on my tv. I would settle for a widescreen format with the black bars, if it would look better and not cut off the edges so I can see the full words/actors, etc.

16x9 is widescreen (well one of them). SVCD doesn't support Anamorphic Widescreen (if I'm not mistaken). You need to set TMPGEnc to 4:3, then choose Full Screen, Keep Aspect Ratio. That will center the image, and give you a widescreen, letterboxed image.

  3. What you suggested didn't work out, it still puts it in full screen. The only way I can make it go with the black bars is if I choose 4:3 for the video and under the advanced tab I choose 16:9 display. Then it puts the bars, but it still looks like it cuts a little of the letters off. Since I am using the NTSC copy that I already made to try to convert it with the black bars, maybe that is the problem. When I encoded it could've been cut off then because I was just doing 4:3 I'll have to try the pal version again and see if that works

    Thanks

Yeah, that's what I meant. I'm sorry I guess I didn't make myself clear. I meant on the video tab use 4:3, and the Advanced tab use 16x9, then choose full screen, keep aspect ratio. Sorry
