I often use CD-R to backup files I'm working on. While they are cheap and reliable, it would be nice to backup to -RW and just have the most current version. For example, if I am scanning old pictures from 1985 then find some more, I'd like those backed up in the same directory.

So, packet writing fits the bill, but is it reliable enough to trust as your primary storage? If you have a system problem in the middle of a write, can it make the whole disk unreadable? Also, can you close the disk so a non-RW drive can read it?

  2. I use it to do daily backups of some files. Its pretty dependable. Only on rare occasions have I had issues with it, one time the computer(win 98 se) crashed right as it was finishing writing to the disc. I had to crtl alt del it to open the disc, and it said that en error on the disc occured and I would have to format the disc to fix it. Only problems right DURING burning have I run into. Never from reading them.

Overall I will say its good, it only happened maybe 3 times since May 2002 when I bought it. And each time it happened when my machine itself was crashing, so if you have a more stabile OS than you should have it much easier.

I dont know about its compatibility with other packet writing software though. Sorry.

Thanks for the response. I went to a site dedicated to CD-R and they were very negative about using it for backups. They suggested using multisession to a CD-RW and then writing that to CD-R when it gets full. I've experimented with that and it seems pretty good.

    Thanks again.
