avoid Ahead/Nero's InCD like the plague

When I bought a LG burner it came with a free CD containing Nero which I installed. Among other things this included something called "InCD". I've tried to uninstall "InCD" twice and each time that messed up my op system (Windows XP Home SP2). I could only recover with a System Restore. Clearly InCD has its hooks deep into the op system and there's no way to get rid of it. It should come with a strong caution: "DO NOT INSTALL!".

Neither Nero nor PowerDVD are necessary for full-using a DVD-writer.

Did search go on the fritz , or you didn't try at all .

Nero provides a clean out tool to remove its product from the system , and then when you reinstall , you dont have to install incd at all .

Just get the clean out tool specifically for the version that is installed .

I had it happen on a windows 2000 system and the Nero tools didn't clear everything out. I was able to get the burner working again but could not load a copy of Nero, soon I discovered that except for copying pressed CD's for use in my car, I didn't even need Nero, I could do everything else using Imgburn. I think the Nero tools failed because of a corrupted install of Nero 7. It tried to uninstall Nero 6 and failed leaving the system hopelessly bollixed up. I was able to uninstall IN CD on my Windows XP installation on the same computer (new hard drive, New OS) after my stupid a$$ made the same mistake and installed it again. Luckily it came out clean or I would have been out the hour I put into that new Harddrive installing software on a clean install. After you get everything sorted out.
Make yourself a disk image. You should probably do it regularly because its suprising how much crap some of us load onto our systems, particularly if we are processing audio and video.

I didn't try searching for anything, and am not sure what you mean.

The first time I tried to uninstall InCD several months ago, it waxed my XP installation, but automatically (itself) reverted to a 1-week old restore point to self-recover the op system.

This second time I tried to uninstall it (yesterday), it:
--disabled my firewall and anti-virus software, and
--disabled both of my DVD burners.
I was able to fix the firewall and anti-virus fairly easy, but nothing worked to activate the DVD burners. The system could not find the drivers, and I couldn't figure out any way to reinstall them. So the only choice was a System Restore to a prior point, which fortunately worked OK.

I'll just leave well enough alone. Next time I reinstall my op system, I'll know to leave the free Nero stuff alone. I liked PowerDVD which also came on the free CD, but recently discovered the free VLC Media Player, so may not need that either.

I believe he meant search the forum for information. Most users here avoid Nero like the plague, and "InCd" and other forms of packet writing software have been troublesome since they were released years ago.

As noted above, you can get the removal tool from Nero. It will then completely uninstall the entire Nero package. After rebooting, you can then reinstall Nero, but choose the custom install option and uncheck all of the options (including InCD) that you don't want/need.

Thanks. I decided to risk the Nero removal tool and found it at their website under Support/Nero6. Looks like it did the job cleanly...

I recently installed a samsung DVD writer that came with a Nero7 OEM disk. As Krispy Kritter mentioned, I customized the install to only get "nero essentials" and tools, which is their standard disk burning engine and diag tools, and nothing else. For me it works great and covers the basics for any burning task. I would have gladly kept my ancient nero 5.5.x install, but it would not see my new drive. Good Luck!

There are other DVD writing softwares. I now use ImgBurn exclusively.

I regularly take InCD off my computers and friends that come to me with "slow computer" problem. Just run Hijack This, look for the INCD entry and nuke it. Come to think of it, just nuke any Nero entry. I have used this technique with Nero 5-7 (can't say about version8, haven't used it) and Nero has continued to work fine.

I am with everyone else; with the new release of Imageburn, I removed Nero from my system altogether and only use Imageburn now.

Avoid packet-writing software altogether.

I had to reformat a Windows 2000 computer about 6-7 years ago, because of a similar issue (not Nero, but somebody else's crap).

Packet-writing is really not suggested anyway, unless you're using DVD-RAM.

The fact that you need to d/l & install a separate application just to uninstall Nero completely just baffles me.
So much so that I haven't touched it in years, nor am I planning to. There are plenty of low resource/open source/easy to install/uninstall apps out there that can do everything Nero does.

Have to agree packet writing had its day many years ago.. the fact that it was never std ised made it a no-go er. That and the reduction in drive space 2/7 (or 500mb on a 700mb cd) I'm not sure if it is even is available to run with a dvd and dvdrw. How many users actually used it??

I have to admit tho the plague is a bit worse.

Usually uninstalling packet writing software just screws up you CD/DVD filters in the registry...it's well documented
