Joining two avi files

Hello Ya'll...Happy Holidays everyone!!!!!!

I was wondering if someone could refer me to a guide that tells you how to join two avi files. Say if you have a movie that you download and it comes in CD1 and CD2? I would like to join them. But..is it best to join them before they are encoded or after they are encoded?

I believe you want to JOIN the .AVI's before you encode them.
