  1. how do i compress mpeg to any other format
    without loosing some quality

    you will always lose quality if you compress yet again a compressed lossy format ...

    "any other format" is rather open ended

    You cannot compress, but you can re-encode to another format. DivX will produce a file one third to one half the size.

    well - yes he can compress (more) to SOME other formats - though as you say, re-encode would be a better term to describe.

    How about a Zip file then, or a RAR that should bring it down a bit

    Other than that, re-compress to DivX using Vdub
    Mpeg 1, AVI > In , DivX AVI out

    Install the Nimo Codec pack, then you will have a big list of codec's to choose from, also install Divx 5.02 (Kazaa) then you can also try that.

    Video > Compression > Codec > settings
    Audio > Compression> Codec > Settings
    SAVE AVI

    Quality, crap in crap out
