I have Windows Vista Home Premium and I downloaded VirtualDub 1.7.8. When I tried opening the AVI video file that i wanted to used on VirtualDub it said:

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'xdiv' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

    -----

I searched for a VFW compatible codec that could be used with VirtualDub but it didn't work.

Please help me I'll be very greatful

    Install the Xvid codec.

If it's installed, it will show up in VD's 'Video>Compression' list. L click on it, then to the right side of the page, L click 'Configure' and you will see the settings. L click 'Target Bitrate' and it will change to 'Target quantizer'. Use a setting of '2' there if you want about the same quality as the original file. Or '3' if you want smaller filesize/quality.

If you want a particular size output, there is a bitrate calculator to the right of the 'Target' settings. It works best with 'Target bitrate' and two pass encoding. For VD guides, just look to the bottom of the VirtualDub toolpage.
