  1. Hi,

I have Win XP Home with service pack 2 amd IE7. About a year ago (or whenever it was released) I upgraded to Media Player 11. I am the "owner" administrator and everything works splendidly when I'm logged on. However, when my wife logs on (she's also an administrator), media player 11 won't launch at all. The only way to get it running is to right click and "run as" my logon.
Also, whenever she visits a website that requires flash player, the page won't display. It tells her she needs to download the latest version. HOWEVER, it has already been done under my logon. The same websites display perfectly under my logon. Any attempt to redo it under her logon still doesn't work.
There are a few other examples but these are the most annoying ones. I've googled every known variation of this problem but haven't found any explanations or solutions. If anyone has any advice I'm all ears.

    Thanks for any input,

    Mattman

Some programs during installation allow you to install for "current user only" or for "all users". In this case, you would want "all users". Likely this is what you have already done.

It could be a corrupt profile. Try creating a new profile with admin rights and see if the programs function correctly.

Had already tried this to no avail. Also, when installing apps I have always installed for "all users", whenever prompted, that is.

    Oh well, the quest continues.

In regard to Flash Player, does she have Java/Javascript turned off? That can also cause webpages not to believe (the latest version of) Flash is installed.

Not that that's necessarily the problem, here, but I just thought I'd check.

Just a guess, and I don't know the cure. It may have to do with Group Policies. You can explore this MS page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307882 Creating a new administrator account seems like it should have corrected this, but who know with Windows.

I didn't think the GPO editor worked with XP home, just Pro, but you might read the page and see. How to fix it seems more obscure.

  6. An Adminstrator account, and an account with administrator privileges, are not the same thing. They are supposed to be, but they are not.

Don't usually see this problem with simple apps, but with many it is a problem with read/write priveleges to specific directories, or admin ownership of specific files. You could try giving her specific rights to the entire drive, specifically check your Application directories in your user directory, because you are an Admin she would not necessarily have rights to those.

Of course you are trying to use WMP11, which judging by numerous forums seems to have more than it's share of issues AND IE7. Try rolling back to WMP9/10 and/or to IE6. If rolling back one or the other solves the problem, then you will at least know which app to troubleshoot. You could also try the MS forums or sending them an email.

  8. Thanks for the responses. So far nothing has worked. I plan to uninstall WMP11 this weekend, play around with the system, reinstall WMP11, & see where that leaves me.

I don't use WMP myself, so having an older version doesn't matter to me. They all play the same files anyway, unless there is a specific feature WMP11 has that you want, just downgrade.

There are other, better media players available, such as VLC, MPC, and I am currently using Zoom Player.

    Good luck.

  10. I wasn't a fan of earlier Media Player versions. I used Music Jukebox but tired of that as well. Once I upgraded to XP I really liked WMP10. I also really like the album art features of WMP11. It fits my needs perfectly. Although I have and use VLC in certain circumstances, it doesn't seem well suited for organizing media libraries, etc... Perhaps it's been upgraded over the past couple years from the version I have.
